MobileMe User reviews

By Elsa Wenzel on 18/07/2008

More Apple reviews , RRP: AU$119.00

The good:

  • MobileMe is built to keep the same data up to date on a Mac, PC, iPhone, and iPod Touch
  • Expands storage from .Mac
  • Interfaces of Me.com are easy to learn and attractive

The bad:

  • MobileMe's rocky launch made us question its stability
  • Calendar lacks key features
  • Free or cheaper services can fill the needs of many of MobileMe's features

The bottomline:

If Apple irons out the kinks, MobileMe could be worthwhile for iLife and iPhone users who want to keep data on their Macs, handset, iPod Touch, as well as Outlook mail and calendars on the same page.

5.8/10

a shaky start, but a great upgrade to .mac for additional services at no additional cost

I still don't understand why on the Australian Apple site, it still says 'Available Soon' for MobileMe while I can go to Me.com or even the Australian Store to sign up for it. Somebody needs to let Apple know to update the page.

Like any new service (and yes, it is new compared to the .mac that preceded it) it has been going through growing pains, but this ugly duckling will definitely grow into a beautiful swan

Pros: It just works - not just yet ;-)

Cons: iWeb websites could get a little speedier - please!

Much better interface than .Mac, and there is nothing out there that compares when you look at MobileMe as a complete package...

Pros: #Galleries - great for sharing photo's with anyone with a broadband connection
#Great integration with iLife 08 and iPhone/iPod Touch

Cons: #Not fully compatible with IE7, not at all with IE6
#Would be advantageous to have and iDisk app on the iPhone/iPod Touch to attach files stored in the "cloud" to emails

One question, why?
The personal, non business user should be fine with regular email which is checked regularly by the phone. So the push email function isn't essential. If you want it though, Bigpond and others offer Exchange push email for around $48 a year. The photo gallery function can be had for a fraction of the cost or free on photo sharing sites. Video sharing is free on YouTube and isn't offered on MobileMe. The storage is a compelling feature, especially for a photographer who wants to back up images while on the road, but for the annual cost, I would rather use an external pocket hard disk with triple the capacity and a lot more speed. Sorry Apple but $119 a year and I can't think of a use for it.

Pros: Please, someone tell me!

Cons: Expensive
Feature light
Same features had for less or free elsewhere
Require fast broadband
Data costs on portable connections could be high
