Adding texture to burned-out areas
An image can be made lighter or darker through two main tools known as Dodge & Burn. The Burn tool darkens an area of the image while the Dodge tool lightens.

Level: Easy
Time needed: About 15 minutes

1. Select the Dodge icon from the toolbox
2. In the Range box on the top navigation bar, set to Highlights to adjust only the highlights. Set Exposure accordingly; in this picture it's at about 50 percent.
3. Let's add noise. Select Filter > Noise > Add Noise. In the Add Noise dialog box, adjust according until you achieve the results you desire.

Some image editing programs have a Noise filter that adds a grain pattern to the image to make it look more like a natural photograph taken using film. Over here, the level of noise was adjusted to add a natural touch to the general feel of the picture. After adjusting the exposure accordingly, you will notice that the use of Noise together with the Dodge tool will help you bring out details in your images without compromising on the overall effect of the picture.
