Apple iTunes 7 User reviews

By James Kim and Donald Bell on 17/07/2008

More Apple reviews , RRP: Free

The good:

  • Apple iTunes 7 shines with a refined but still-intuitive interface
  • Fabulous and useful Cover Flow album view adds dimension to music
  • iTunes Store now features movies and games
  • Movie pricing is consistent and competitive
  • Supports gapless audio playback
  • Can find missing album art
  • Has new features such as Download Manager

The bad:

  • iTunes 7, along with Cover Flow, is more processor-intensive than version 6
  • Underdeveloped Radio section
  • No built-in recording features
  • Movie downloads are not available outside the US
  • Some bugs reported by users
  • Album art retrieval feature needs work

The bottomline:

Apple iTunes 7 is a required upgrade for new iPod owners. Its refined interface, particularly Cover Flow, and useful new features trump the fact that the application is processor intensive.

The iTunes store is a joke!! 5 licences for music you buy? If you buy something you own it! Get real and remove that stupid rule and I might buy another tune.

Pros: Lots of music on offer.

Cons: Expensive and ridiculous rule of 5 computer systems. The way technology changes you will go through 5 licences in your lifetime guaranteed.

iTunes does indeed have a different user experience to WMP, as many have pointed out. For me, I find it very intuitive and user friendly, both for day to day listening and arranging music for iPods.

The album art is a bit of a gimmick but does add excitement to an otherwise dull interface. The lack of a visible playlist when using the visualiser like in WMP is one of my main gripes. iTunes ships with a couple of very nice visualisers but one has to choose between the visualiser or the playlist view.

Audio and video playback is excellent and the crossfade and gapless playback features are good, though not applicable to iPods which is annoying.

Podcasting features is great and movie rentals will be a welcome addition in the future.

Overall, iTunes is a simple, intuitive and adequately power program for Windows and Mac users. iTunes also allows far more freedom in how you can use and share your iTunes DRM music than WMP does which gives the end user more freedom.

Pros: Simple and intuitive
Great features
Audio and Video support and playback is good
1st rate podcasting manager

Cons: Visualiser not integrated enough
Internet radio feature is ho-hum
No support for WM-DRM
No movie rentals in Australia yet

Distortion??? Slow Rip speed??? am I using the same app?
Maybe all these issues are related to slow pcs. I have no problems, although I am running a 2.4GHz dual core with 2GB of RAM.

Pros: Great app, coverflow, fast searching, smart playlists

Cons: none

I was astounded reading the previous comments. I guess if I wanted full, command-line level, functionality then I'd be disappointed, but that's not what iTunes is about. It is about listening to music, watching video, transferring data to iPods. iTunes definitely meets the needs of it's intended audience, those of us that just want easy access to our entertainment media so we can get on with things.

Pros: Easy, consistent, interface

Cons: Lack of tabbed browsing
Lack of movies in Australia (although, technically, that's not specific to the software, it does reduce it's functionality in the Australian market)

OK program, but not the best.

Pros: * Plays music good
* Good looking
* Cover flow looks good
* Syncing with iPod works great

Cons: * Bad at video playback
* Lack of list pane feature, which is handy for WMP users, relies more on playlists instead.
* Album art downloading system not always effective.

I'm an apple fan boy, but apple has made some bad chooses with the australian market, why release the Apple TV when the iTunes store doesn't even support movies or TV shows, but that aside, the iTunes application is great and keeps all my music organised.

Pros: Keeps all my music organised and with all the eye candy.

Cons: CPU intensive.
Takes a while to load my library.
Bad Video Playback.
