Longhorn's days have come to an end, and the dawning of the age of Microsoft Windows Vista is upon us. The beta version of Microsoft's new operating system lacks many of the features slated for the final OS, due out late next year, and it is intended primarily for software developers. However, the beta does include some interesting signs of things to come, such as improved desktop search functionality powered through a versatile use of the metadata used to index files.
The Windows Vista beta is also stocked with a beta version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, but a separate IE 7 beta for XP is now also available. Most of the new features available in IE 7 are old hat for other competing browsers, such as the tabbed browsing and the RSS capabilities available in Firefox, Netscape, and Apple Safari RSS.
