updated Sony has unveiled three ranges capable of displaying 3D TV: the LX900, the HX800 and HX900. While the LX900 comes with 3D on-board, the two other series need a 3D add-on. Of the HX series, we would pick the HX900 as the screen with the potential for best quality, and the 3D option just gives it some added flexibility.

The Sony Bravia KDL46HX900 features a 1920x1080 resolution and features an "Intelligent Dynamic LED" backlight which should offer a higher contrast level than the edge-lit HX800. Sony's LED backlight allows the screen to turn sections off for higher contrast, and based on a brief demo of a moving white image on a black screen it appeared to work well — without the haloing we've seen on competing technologies.

The HX900 is also pretty tricked up with other features as it comes with Ethernet connectivity bringing DLNA content and IPTV in the form of Bravia Internet Video. And the battle of the hertz hasn't abated yet, with Sony's latest motion compensation feature now featuring MotionFlow PRO 400. But as with any of these technologies we don't expect it to be eight times smoother than standard PAL 50Hz.

The HX900 comes in a choice of two sizes, the 46-inch Sony Bravia KDL46HX900 (AU$4,699), and the 52-inch KDL52HX900 (AU$5,699). Both feature the company's new "Monolithic Design" aesthetic and are adjustable between vertical and six degrees — for low tables, you see.

The TV will be available in July, and meanwhile pricing for the the 3D add-ons has been announced, with the 3D receiver being AU$69 while the glasses will cost AU$99 each.

It isn't a 400mhz refresh rate. It has 'Motionflow 400' which is actually a modified form of 200mhz technology.

Yes, Motionflow 400 Pro doesn't actually mean that it has 400Hz refresh rate. It is only a 200 Hz mode where the horizontal sections are blacked out sequentially in each frame to stop the brain from remembering features in previous frames and hence reduce perceived blurring. But it isn't wrong because the 400 isn't followed by Hz whereas in other models it is.

You can say it is misleading but it isn't wrong and some things you have to work out.

i work in audio/visual sales been testing the new bravia kdl46hx900 with free to air and bluray for 2days. Big improvement from the last years model, black levels are much better with no visible clouding. skin tones are not as pinky as previous model, but u would have to do some tweaking. tested the dark night on bluray and it showed off how good the blacks where on batmans suit but still lacks a bit of shadow detail. you will not get this with the panasonic g10/g15 series plasma or my favourite pioneer lx kuro gen8/9, but close. motion was dissappointing, remember 200hz motionflow does not work on all scenes have it off when watching dvd/bluray or else you get halo. some slight lag but i'm getting picky here! most people will not see this. the usb connection can now handle 1080p avc mp4 movie content big applause from sony and another point it's also much quicker to change channels than the previous models. sharpness and detail was breath taking when watching dark knight on bluray you can even see the film grain, some might say too sharp. free to air tv was not bad but what do you expect with the inconsistency quality with our networks. (nba basketball one hd and csi miami 9hd would show how good the broadcast is). one day it will get there! the inbuilt speakers were average but better than other brands. but just remember get yourself a quality surround sound system and a bluray player if u want to get the full hd experience not half the experience. the aesthetic of the hx900 looks clean with a flushed glass screen covering the actual lcd panel with no bezel sticking out which resembles the look of a plasma, but beware of high reflections which is more noticeable than plasma. they r quite deep so if u r looking at wall mounting then wait for the sony nx800 led (still the led samsung r the thinnest). viewing angle has also improved to previous models but again not as good as plasma. overall i think the hx900 has its stunning looks and excellent performance for a lcd at this stage but if u want the newest model to show off, then go out and grab one!
highly recommend 8.6/10

The Good:looks pretty cool

The Bad:bet it's too expensive

i bought a 42" SONIQ Full HD from JB hi fi for $1500 with the 5 year extended warranty - this was nearly 3 years ago now i've still never had a single problem with it. My tech friends and people in the know all warned me away from it but now they're the same friends who come round and comment on the awesome picture quality when their samsungs and sonys have failed them and mine is still going strong. i don't think brands really mean that much (except for my mate's 50" high end pioneer plasma) or maybe i just got lucky i don't know? still glad i got the extended warranty tho - is well worth it.
