Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX7

The Cyber-shot TX7 looks set to improve on Sony's TX1, with HD video, SD card compatibility and the company's Transfer Jet technology.

We really like the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX1 for all that it is, but, like most first versions, there was room for improvement. The follow-up, the DSC-TX7, announced at CES 2010 looks to be a solid step up.

It's still using a back-illuminated Exmor R 10-megapixel sensor. Though, it gets a new 25mm-equivalent wide-angle lens to work with, and on back is a larger, 3.5-inch LCD with a 921K-dot resolution. And before we go too much further, let me point out that it's one of two new Sony cameras to capture video at full HD (1920x1080-pixel resolution at 60i) in AVCHD format. Plus, it supports HDMI out and has a stereo mic up front. It even uses an improved optical stabilisation to help control shake while you're on the move.

A lot of the shooting features are the same as the TX1, but there are a few new options. The high-speed sensor allows for some fast shooting — 10fps in its burst mode — but it also adds things like better handheld low-light shots, a new High Dynamic Range mode for balancing out high-contrast scenes (a weakness of the TX1), and an improved Sweep Panorama, which provides better stitching of scenes with moving objects and people.

Two other big features have to do with the camera's memory: the TX7 takes both Memory Stick Pro Duo cards as well as SDHC cards. And, the camera supports Sony's Transfer Jet Memory Sticks, which can do wireless transfers from the TX7 to Transfer Jet-enabled cameras or computers, or to a USB-docking station that can be connected to a compatible TV, digital frame or computer.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX7 is available now for AU$649. Transfer Jet technology is currently not available in Australia. Stay tuned for our full review soon.

yeah i have a t500 and agree: lots of bass distortion from loud concerts. i also have a tx1 which records very tinny sound [little if any bass]. best for loud concerts is the t300 which i still use for audio [only]. has anyone tried the tx7 at a loud gig yet? the HD looks good but the zoom to only 100mm is disappointing [t500 is 165 if i recall].

The Good:All good!

The Bad:no 3:2 aspect ratio (only 4:3 and 19:6 available)

The best compact camera ever! Rich of good features likes Exmor R CMOS sensor, HDR, 10 fps shoots, 1080i movie, intelligent scene detection, great user interface! You must have it!

The Good:everything, amazing little gem.

The Bad:haven't found one (yet)

have had this little beauty for a couple of weeks & am so happy with it. It has everything & more in what I was looking for in a compact camera. Photos are clear, camera itself is easy to use, just set to Auto point & shoot. Am going OS later this year & will suit my needs perfectly, especially the Sweep Panorama function, brillent. The low light shots are fantastic, HD movie function excellent. I got the party-shot via Sony on line & is a great little add-on. Great at dinner parties. I will have to invest in an extra battery, as I am using all the functions at the moment, battery runs low quickly. This camera is an amazing little gem. Very happy ;)

yep! I couldn't wait, so I ordered on line, paid $504Aus, last Sat 30th, (has gone up since then to $519Aus). Recieved it today, 5th Feb. through ElectronicBazzar. Included in my prize I got carry case & LCD proctor for ordering the sony memory sticks with them. I am still charging the battery, as I only got an hr ago, but what I can say, looks & feels nice. I have played with the TX1, so I know I will be happy with the upgrade to TX7.
