Sony Ericsson W810i

By Jeremy Roche on 25 May 2006

An excellent phone with plenty of storage space for photos. The camera is above average for a mobile phone, as are the supplied headphones. While there is no need for W800i users to upgrade to this model, the W810i offers an impressive feature set for those considering the purchase.

Design
The W810i is the fourth Walkman-branded phone we've seen so far and Sony Ericsson seems to be carefully refining its musical line of mobiles with each iteration, this time with an upgrade of the W800i. The W810i is very similar in appearance to its predecessor but it loses the W800i's Day-Glo orange case and adopts a more sophisticated black.

Measuring 100 by 46 by 19.5mm and weighing in at 99 grams, it's pretty much the same size as the W800i -- well, Sony Ericsson has shaved 1mm off the thickness.

The numerical keys on the W810i are improved by being more separated than the keys on the W800i. Navigation is also easier due to a four-way rocker with a selection key in the middle, rather than a fiddly joystick. Customisable soft keys to either side of the navigation are arranged attractively in two circles, each containing three shortcuts. On the left set of soft keys is an orange "W" key that takes you into the Walkman menu where you can sort music on the phone by artist, playlist or track.

The camera shortcut key on the right side of the phone switches the W810i's display into a landscape-oriented electronic viewfinder when held down. The music shortcut key on the left acts as a play/pause button. Music can be played back through the supplied Sony bass-enhanced headphones, if connected, or through the W810i's built-in speaker.

Features
The W810i has an average-sized 176 by 220-pixel display capable of displaying up to 262,144 colours. Photos taken using the built-in 2-megapixel camera aren't done justice on the small display but can easily be transferred via Bluetooth or the supplied USB cable and viewed on a larger PC or laptop monitor.

Supporting four types of GSM networks, the W810 is crowned a quad-band or "world" phone, meaning you'll be able to make calls pretty much anywhere there is coverage. The W800i, by comparison, is a tri-band phone.

Regular POP3 and IMAP e-mail accounts can be accessed once set up and the W810i supports text and picture messaging. An FM radio, media player, video and sound recorder round out its abilities. Polyphonic and MP3/AAC ringtones are supported.

Sony Ericsson includes a 512MB Memory Stick Duo that slots into the side of the phone and stores around 120 songs or 1,300 pictures. There's only 20MB of internal memory on the W810i, down from the W800i's 34MB, but with a 512MB card bundled, we don't really care too much.

Performance
While we found Bluetooth handy for syncing contacts with our laptop, it's a good idea to use the USB cable for transferring music or photos. It took us about 35 minutes to transfer an hour's worth of music to the phone using Bluetooth.

Unlike the upcoming Sony Ericsson K800i, the W810i holds onto its predecessor's camera resolution of two megapixels. Its auto-focus mode works well even with macro shots, but we found the shutter lag annoying and pictures taken in low light came to be grainy -- night assist mode and using the built-in LED flash didn't do much to alleviate this. Provided there is adequate lighting, like on a bright, sunny day, the W810i's camera performs admirably.

Navigation of the W810 menus is pleasantly intuitive, like most recent Sony Ericsson phones. The extra screen resolution is a definite improvement when compared to previous models such as the T610 and T630. Themes can be applied to change the look and layout of the menus and Sony Ericsson pre-installs around 30 polyphonic ring tones to choose from. MP3s stored internally or on the memory card can also be used for ring tones.

Battery life isn't a concern with the W810i. We easily managed to get four or five days out of the phone between charges with average use of the phone's call, text and music features.

If you're looking for a phone with a good camera, a low-key profile that's not going to bulge in your pocket and adequate storage space for around six albums worth of music, we highly recommend the W810i. The interface and navigation isn't up to the standard of the iPod. It's only a second-generation (2G) phone, so as long as you're not fussed about video streaming and calling, it has features that will keep most users content. The W810i might run into some competition with Nokia's N91 when it is released mid-2006, as it sports a 4GB hard drive and 3G connectivity; unlike the W810i, it's fairly bulky.

Correction: Our original review stated that the W810i supports the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP); however, it doesn't.

    • Good: Good camera, video & music, sturdy phone, LED flashlight, easy and simple to use
    • Bad: very low sms storage, keys a bit close together

This phone has been awesome for the 2+ years i've had it. Dissapointed at it's lack of inbox storage for messages, requiring me to constantly empty my inbox/sent messages. slightly bulky. Keys a bit close together.
Great music phone, video and camera capabilites, love the LED flash which you can use as a torch.
Recently i got a bit of water on the inside of the phone, and since then it's been turning itself off quite often, especially when shaken or bumped. I'm surprised others have this problem also.

Great phone but needs more sms storage.

    • Good: Media Player
    • Bad: Hard to restart

This phone is overall pretty damn good, but don't turn it off, otherwise you'll be stuck in a several hour long battle trying to turn it on again as it varies between hardly starting to only half starting up, shutting down and then half starting up again. You find yourself constantly pulling the battery out, which I might add is a very hard task on it's own as only the bottom lip of the battery is exposed. HORRID!
Media player is fantastic, I just wish the phone had more internal memory. It can support up to 8GB of external memory which is pretty awesome though.

    • Good: Everything; literally the best phone ever.
    • Bad: Nothing.

This phone features it all; great music playback and other features right down to a torch feature using the camera's led flash...

This phone has been through hell and back with me, at the moment, it has carked it from swimming AGAIN, but it will be fixed tomorrow. =)

    Love this phone. 10/10

    • Good: though cam shares 2megapix resolution as predecessors, quality is visibly better though not sure why
    • Bad: Looks and feels like its made entirely out of cheap plastic plus Shuts down by itself like nobody's business

I haven't exactly owned this phone before but I know 3 ppl who had it. And all 3 of them experienced the same problem with it.
This nutty phone keeps shutting itself down for no reason. You could be reading a message or answering a call and halfway through the phone suddenly goes pitchblack dead. If it lands a little too hard on the table after your done with it, it shuts off too. Shake it a little too vigorously and off it goes.

I loved this phone until I left it the backseat of a cab. Good music quality does everything you expect it too. Lasts well, and I'm tough on phones. If you have the cahnce to buy one and just want a good reliable phone, this is the phone for you.

I asked 3 competing retailer stores which phone had the best reception and was the most reliable. They all said the W810i.
I had it for 6 months lost it and insurance asked me which phone I wanted. I got another W810i.
I won't touch nokia any more.
Sony erriccson spends money on quality control and Nokia spends on warranty repairs.
I had a Nokia 6234 which has been replaced after 3 warranty repairs and the replacement didn't make it to the end of my 24 month contract.
I recently bought 2 Nokia 6110 navigators for my staff.
I replaced both in 7 days as they were faulty handsets out of the box.
1 x 2 times and the other 3 x times in the first 2 weeks.
I have a 4 GB memory stick, speakers and play it through my car stereo aux in.
I only carry my W810i out.
It is my phone, diary, organiser, ipod/walkman, digital camera, torch and video camera.
    I replaced the Nokia 6234 with a C902 and I couldn't be happier.
    Well done guys.

    • Good: Looks nice & buttons layed out well.
Above average camera especially in the day.
      Good sound and fast start-up.
Feels sturdy and that it will last a long time.

    • Bad: A little thick in the feel.
Screen could have been bigger considering the font is fairy big.
When I turn the phone off it goes back to the default for menu settings which is the most annoying thing about it.

Bought this phone after my Nokia failed. Obviously takes getting used to since I am used to Nokia but would recommend as a good overall phone with some good features for the price.

    • Good: Excellent music quality on loudspeaker
      Easy to use
      Strong construction
      The Light!!!
    • Bad: A little thinner would be better

The best phone I have ever had! It is nearly 2 yrs old and is going well. Very strong construction, I have dropped it many times.

One of the best features which I use regularly is the Light (the camera led flash can become a light). Hard to find a replacement as most phones don't have this feature.
