Sony Ericsson W850i

By Ella Morton on 05 December 2006

The move to a slider form factor has not been without problems, but overall the W850i is another winning Walkman phone.

    • Good: Great convenient removable storage
    • Bad: Buggy software, crappy LCD screen fades in and out, no software/firmware updates from SE to try rectify the many issues with this phone.

Great phone at first, I have owned this phone for almost 12 months and was in love at first, used the MP3 player every day, even bought a bluetooth stereo headset but then the problems started.

Where do I begin? What I noticed as soon as I got it was that the lcd screen brightness seems to randomly fade up and down no matter what brightness setting its on...

Then the sound quality is poor with both the corded headset and the HBH-DS200 bluetooth headset.

It now likes to turn itself off and on again without warning, crashes and is unreliable.

Isn't very able to do anything resembling surfing the internet apart from trying to view a website then crashing...

After all the faults Sony Ericsson are still yet to release even 1 software/firmware update via their "Update Service".

As a result I'm feeling very let down by the after-sale service from SE. Will think twice before getting another SE handset unless I see good reviews here.

This is obviously a cell phone designed for people age 30 and younger. Yet I’ve carried this Walkman phone for three days and I’m in love.

    • Good: Slick interface, design, walkman (light effects = awesome), inclusion of 1GB Memory stick, Memory Stick PRO Duo support, music transfer software organizes music very well, sturdy phone (mine has been dropped on concrete many times with no damage), camera quality fantastic, photo touch up software on phone itself, VideoDJ, PhotoDJ and MusicDJ, Bluetooth, RSS Reader, 3G, TrackID (VERY useful!!).
    • Bad: Thick frame, screen smudges quite a lot, no options to stop screen going into standby mode.

I have been using the W850i for close to a year now, and it has been fantastic for me. One comment I would like to make about the navigation buttons is that after using it for a couple of hours I got used to the phones' navigation keys.

    • Good: Fantastic sound quality, pretty good picture quality for 2MP camera, VideoDJ feature is a pretty nifty built in video editor.
    • Bad: Bit chunky, keypad and navigation buttons too small and annoying to use (where's the joystick?) and uploading songs takes WAAAAY too long!

The sound quality is outstanding. But transferring music takes too long and the disc2phone software is difficult to navigate around (doesn't have any search features, for example) so if you have a lot of songs on your PC it makes it a bit painful to find what you want to transfer. The navigation buttons are small and fiddly.

    • Good: Great memory,great sound.easy to use.
I loved this phone.Battery life was pretty good too.
    • Bad: Camera should have been better.Xenon flash and auto focus would have been perfect, and more megapixels.
Bit too chunky, could have been slimmer.

Great phone.Broke after a year and numerous drops on the floor. On off button glowing red.

    • Good: walkman player, reads lots of file types and fast bluetooth, 1gb memory card in box, alright camera, videos are of acceptable quality, infared, easy to transfer songs to using cable (in box) and computer, good headphones in box
    • Bad: quite chunky if in case, screens hard to see in sunlight and is a bit small, a few too many nooks and cranys that get dirt in them

have had this phone for a few months and has been pretty good except for a couple of days where walkman player was cutting out but then it just stoped hapening and works fine now! music player is awsome! and can take a sony pro duo card up to 4 gb!
