Sony Ericsson W850i
By Ella Morton on 05 December 2006
The move to a slider form factor has not been without problems, but overall the W850i is another winning Walkman phone.

- Good: Great for music.
Lotsa of space!
Cool functions. - Bad: Battery.
Top keypad cracked but not noticable.
I love this phone. I own one at the moment. Love it to death! Great design.
The only thing that annoys me is the
battery. I dont over-use my fone, but
seems to go flat pretty quick. I read someone elses comment saying their
battery life is good. So maybe its just
my phone.
- Good: Great for music.

- Good: - Sound/music quality excellent from a mobile
- Very good interface that's easy to navigate
- Reliable (such an important thing with all this rubbish on the market) - Bad: - Getting a handsfree to work is a bit fiddly, especially when in the car
- Bluetooth doesn't work with a Mac (but then most phone companies think that everyone owns a PC)
An excellent phone. I can't believe after going through 3 Motorola V3x phones in a week and 6 months of repairs I've finally ended up with a great reliable phone. It does everything you need it to do, the quality is excellent and I highly recommend it.
- Good: - Sound/music quality excellent from a mobile

- Good: Beautiful interface, spiffy ideas in aesthetic and feature design. Typically cutting edge Sony ideas.
- Bad: Really average phone sound qaulity
Really average MP3 sound quality
This is a great phone when it comes to an elegant designed exterior, good screen and beautiful software. Like most of Sony products there are numerous innovative ideas in the software and hardware. The phone is definitely feature rich.
Unfortunately I don't need a phone for it's beauty or it's features. I need a phone to make calls. This is where the W850i fails - the sound for the W850i user is muddled and of poor quality. When using a phone this would seem like the most important characteristic for me - you need to get a sense of what the other person is saying between the lines, but you can't at this level of quality.
The reception strength is only average - this means no signal in areas of less reception.
The MP3 player, again beautiful and feature rich, but the quality is also muddled - almost as if they cut of the lower frequencies in order to hide some noise. You can try to compensate with the equalizer cannot of course bring back what was cut off.
My assessment of the quality was confirmed by a German Online and Print source: connect.de which shows the really average acustic and reception quality of Sony phones (despite strong batteries). (Motorolla (new generation only) generally scored high on all 3 counts, Nokia the same as Sony (although the previous "brick" generation was generally excellent, and Samsung generally excellent acustic with 1/2 the models excellent reception, the other 1/2 unusable). -

- Good: Fantastic design, sound, feel and built quality.
- Bad: Sound is not as good as W810i but even so, it is phenominal!
Fantastic phone from the fantastic phone peopl! Have used Sony Ericsson products for years and they are fautless - the highest of quality and contain the best of features. Beats competitors such as Nokia by far.
This phone especially wins me over - no matter how much you slide it, it feels like it was the first day you got it! The sound is amazing and the screen is perfect for watching quality video.
Another excellent bonus that Sony Ericsson have provided is the 1GB memory stick - very generous.
