Sony Ericsson W880i

By Jeremy Roche on 28 May 2007

The Sony Ericsson W880i's appeal lies in its skinny profile and music features, although it will be too small for some.

The phone is overall excellent. Easy to drive and set up to suit my needs and taste. The camera works well enough for my use even without a flash in night mode.
I work nights in areas with both good and very poor fluorescent and incandescent lighting, the screen is very clear and reflection free under night conditions.
I’m thinking the Blue Ant X5 A2DP Bluetooth stereo headset and the to be released 4 Gig memory card might complete this package nicely ;-)

    • Good: One slim slick, unit. Looks classy in silver/black and young ‘n’ fresh in black/orange. The rubbery non slip back cover is a good practical touch.
After read CNet’s tip on power saving I adjusted the brightness down to the minimum of 50% to increase battery life and now realize per day; 2hrs of Mp3’s playing, 4 or 5 calls and 2 or 3 text messages giving easily six days before a recharge. Thanks CNet

    • Bad: The backlighting doesn’t seem consistent across the key pad but improves if the brightness control is increased.
I feel the auto key lock should be tied into the hands free profile especially as this is a Walkman series phone. I normally have the keypad on auto lock and find having to unlock the phone to move between song tracks a pain in the butt.
Ended up setting a shortcut key to lock/unlock the keypad.

This Walkman phone really, really needs a 3.5mm jack to accept user’s headphones, though the adapter is better than nothing. I’m sure I can find a pocket to accept the (9ft)2.7 metres of wire between my 800i and my Sony ‘back of neck’ headphones :-(.

I got this phone two weeks ago, and I'm very happy! Sure, the buttons were a little hard to use at first, but now they are a piece of cake!
I simply LOVE the thin design!

Some people may complain about the camera, but really it s very good for such a thin phone as this... if you want a good camera, get a digicam or a cybershot phone!

    • Good: Oh so thin!
      Looks Great!
      Great interface
      Screen is beautiful
      Good build quality!
    • Bad: Buttons take a teeny bit to get used to.
      A tad expensive.
Battery life shorter than what I'm used to, but no big deal as I have plenty of powerpoints...
Speaker a little tinny (to be expected from a thin phone)

Got my phone on 25th march 07 and has been to repair shop twice. Both times for turning itself off several times a day.

This is my first phone, and its really good. Attracts a lot of attention and the pros outweigh the cons.

    • Good: Small, thin, sleek. Nice music playback with the bass, good battery, M2 card (might be compatible with the 4 gig that comes out), good camera
    • Bad: No flash for camera for those who subsititute a phone for camera, but the night mode really helps in some places.

For a 3G phone this lasts much longer than other phones affliated to 3G with casual usage.
Pretty much a W850 just redesigned in a different package - minus the flash, fm radio, slider function and the great external speakers i guess they had to do this to reach this slim design.
Great multimedia phone with a sleek and sexy design.

    • Good: Stylish and sleek, Thin size, Great Music playback, 1Gb mem stick, very light, easy and one of the best non symbian os.
    • Bad: Number pad a bit hard to play games at times, No flash, would be good if they had a rubber plug for the charger/usb port to protect it from dust. speaker sound could be better. Note: after 40 min of talk the phone did not get as warm as i expected from a slim design.

a few flaws notice just after 3 days of use worth sharing

    • Good: read other's comment
    • Bad: 1.battery lasted 3 days with min use
      2. earphones keeps falling out when on the move, crap design, should stick with old fashion hard plastic type of earpiece
      3. no remote control on earpiece for music player.
      4. Black screen saver kicks in when inactive for like 10 secs...maybe there's a way to fix this, but yet to find out how
      5. font is slightly small when surfing the net
