Sony MDR-EX90LP

By Jasmine France on 25 October 2006

The Sony MDR-EX90LP earbuds sound as good as their price tag suggests, but there's nothing particularly exciting about them. They're just good headphones with an understated design.

Editor's rating:7.5 User rating:9.1
  • Good: Excellent clarity and detail • Decent bass response • Understated black-and-silver design meshes well with most gadgets
  • Bad: Included silicone ear fittings don't always create a seal with the ear • No cable extender for at-home listening
  • Specs: 3.5mm stereo • See more specifications
  • RRP: AU$199.00

It may be hard to believe now, but Sony used to rule the portable audio world. And if the company keeps turning out quality headphones, it may keep a share of that world. Sony's latest pair of low-profile earbuds, the MDR-EX90LP, stand to help the case. These AU$200 'phones aren't jaw-droppingly new or advanced, but they do provide quality audio, a comfortable fit, and an understated design, making them a suitable choice for any on-the-go listener.

The MDR-EX90LP earphones stick to basic black with some shiny silver accenting just at the earbud. The cord is roughly 130 centimetres long, though the right 'bud's cord is slightly longer so that you can wear the cable down your back and out of your way. This length is just right for on-the-go use but insufficient for listening at home on your computer or stereo system -- a cable extender would have been a nice extra. Sony does throw in a good leather case and a stowing insert (for wrapping the cable). You also get three sets of silicone eartips in different sizes, and although these are comfortable, we found that they don't really make a seal with the ear as models from Shure do.

The included case serves to store and protect the earbuds.

So the MDR-EX90LPs aren't noise-isolation earphones -- nor does Sony claim them to be. The downside is that extraneous noise can seep into your music-listening experience; on the other hand, this means that you can still hear what's going on around you, which is probably safer in most cases. Another negative is that bass isn't as present as it would be with a proper seal. However, the MDR-EX90LPs provide a rather tight low end, it's just not as thumping as with noise-isolation models (or full-size headphones, for that matter).

In general, sound quality provided by the MDR-EX90LP earphones is superior. All genres of music sound equally good, making these 'phones a great choice for a wide variety of listeners. The MDR-EXX90LPs offer great high-end detail and clarity, and we were rewarded with a rich and warm midrange. Of course, plenty of worthy competitors are in this price range, but now you can add one more option to the list.

Its not widely reported, but the bass response does get tighter with use with earphones(around 40 hours) . I agree that the es-90's have a good balance of treble, mid and bass response. Bass on the 'Flat' equalizer mode on ipod is too subtle if you listen to hip hop or rock, but change to Rock setting, and....wow, I love these cans for all my music.

    • Good: looks classy, futuristic, fits perfect, best sounding earphones ever!
    • Bad: needs more bass and a good thump!

i own a pair of the BOSE in-ear 'phones' and absolutly love em'!! they thump and thump and thump!! but their only problem is it has very low treble: no clarity. so one day i went out to check out these sony MDREX90LP hoping that for the price it's set at, it would be just brilliant. i did buy em' hoping that they would have as much thump than my ear-vibrating BOSE 'phones' and more clarity.. when i heard em' the first time.. i was very very disapointed! no thump but great great sound but a bit too much on the high end. i was looking to return em' back to the store as it didnt meet my expectations but ended up repackaging em' and giving em' to my partner telling her i got em for her as a non-ocassion present.. (hehe..shhh). i still have my BOSE 'phones' and still love em' as they are the only 'phones' with thump that i need. why cant BOSE & SONY just make one earphone together i wonder?? lol.

    • Good: this is the best in earphone you will have
    • Bad: none

    hiyah!
i have been a fan of sony eversince the era of WALKMAN portable players. THEY MAKE HISTORY you know...

anyways, my opinion here is that the MDR-EX90LP is on of the premium, high quality sound in earphone you'll ever have.

    WHY?

its because i already have one.
I can say that because it gives the sound a clarity, clean music in your ear.

    • Good: Sounds overwhelmingly good in all music genres.

Precision monitoring means output will be balanced/equalised in all frequency ranges (low bass, mid voice, high treble) resulting in a perfect sound experience; you won't listen either too much or too low bass, and either too much or too low treble.

Try listening your favorite music with this headphone. You'll be surprised how much you haven't heard the music before.
    • Bad: It's just perfect. It produces sound the same as it sounded in recording/mastering studio.

It's the way the sound is meant to be heard, and intended by your fave artists/idols.

Just recently bought this headphone and been really happy with it.

Previously thought about buying a headphone with back neck strap. Luckily the store put all headphone samples in front so that customers with portable player can give it a try.

Result: those with price tag lower than AUD$99 sounded crap, whether it's noise cancelling or not. There's decent one with AUD$100, but it doesn't sound as near as this!

    • Good: look good
    • Bad: too unfortable to wear - poor design

this is an overly generous review by cnet.
sound is, OK, but there's similar priced earphones that give better sound.
but key thing is these things are really uncomfortable to wear! after a v.short time i find them hurting my ears!

I'm guessing cnet didn't 'field test' them...

Yeah, they are really very good, but not perfect. Maybe a liitle bit more high freq. and it could be more balanced. At now EX90LP can give you strong and power Bass. The most vexing trouble of this earphones - people in rage 4-5 meters can hear your music very good.

    • Good: Great bass, great sound, it makes my Samsung Yp-K5 sounds much better.
    • Bad: The cord, the price

The best Sony earphones I ever had.

    • Good: One of the 3 silicone earbuds actually fit. They do not isolate sound perfectly, but I ride on the NYC subway everyday. You DO want to have some idea what is going on around you. Great midrange, and I have no issue with the bass response. Sounds clear and has punch.
    • Bad: The cord is becoming irritating, should have been better designed. OK...maybe the Shures sound a bit better, but at what cost? 2x-3x the cost of the Sony? Not worth it in my opinion. These sound terrific and these ears are happy!

I just purchased these from Circuit City. I plugged them into my new Ipod 80GB Video and WOW!! What a difference!! These sound fabulous!
