Disney has announced the cinematic release date for the next film in the Star Wars series, Episode VII.
We have a bit of a wait ahead of us for the next Star Wars film. Disney, which announced the production of Episode VII upon its US$4.05 billion purchase of LucasFilm last year, has announced that the next instalment of the saga will arrive in cinemas on 18 December 2015.
Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said on the Star Wars website, "We're very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday film-going season but also ensure our extraordinary film-making team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture."
That the release date is over two years away shouldn't really come as a surprise; so far, no actors have been confirmed to star in the film, although JJ Abrams has been signed on to direct, as well as co-write the script with Lawrence Kasdan, who penned Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. John Williams will also be making a return to Star Wars to compose the score.
