If a report in The Australian is correct, Telstra is preparing to launch a streaming games service in Australia in 2012.
According to the report, accessing the service will require a Telstra T-Box, which currently has the ability to receive and record digital TV, stream movies and offers a cut-down Foxtel subscription service, via the internet.
The new subscription service will allow users to play current-release video games from publishers such as EA. All the processing and storage for the games would be done from a cloud computing set-up and streamed to the user.
A key reason for this supposed development is the size of the Australian gaming market, with GfK estimating its current worth at AU$1.7 billion and projecting a value of AU$2.5 billion by 2014. The report also states that there are some 200,000 T-Box units sitting in lounge rooms across Australia.
