Dell Adamo

Dell's upscale Adamo is a 13-inch laptop for those who value design and finish as much as performance, but its luxury price will limit the potential audience.

Apple iMac 24-inch (2009)

Apple made a number of changes to the 24-inch iMac, but making it available at this price is the most impressive. The rest of the updates are welcome, and Apple's multitasking capability remains unmatched.

Reviews

  • Apple iMac (20-inch, 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2009)

A few other all-in-ones make this 20-inch iMac look expensive on a dollars-per-screen-inch basis, but none are as attractive or as capable juggling multiple programs. With a fast dual-core CPU and a strong array of features, Apple's updated all-in-one will slide seamlessly into a variety of roles at home or at work.

  • Apple MacBook Pro (2.66GHz, 17-inch)

A little late to the party, Apple's redesigned 17-inch MacBook Pro joins the 15-inch model with a redesigned aluminium body, new trackpad with expanded functionality, and a dual graphics set-up for either longer battery life or better performance.

  • Dell Studio XPS 16

The Dell Studio XPS 16 is an attractive laptop that handles HD content particularly well, although it suffers from an unimpressive battery life.

  • Acer Aspire 8930G (Core 2 Duo T9400 processor 2.53GHz, 4GB RAM)

With a true 1080p display, the 18-inch Acer Aspire 8930G is a capable HD content playback machine.

  • Sony VAIO LT VCG-LT28G

We're still trying to work out who the target market for the highly expensive LT VAIO is. Design-crazed multimillionaires, perhaps.

  • ASUS U2E

The Asus U2E is a fantastic laptop. It's far slower than rivals such as the Sony Vaio TZ series or MacBook Air, but it's stylish, feature-rich and in many ways more desirable than many of the alternatives.

  • Apple MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.4GHz)

Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pro gets a solid under-the-hood upgrade for better performance and longer battery life, allowing the MacBook Pro to put enough distance between itself and the lower-end MacBook to justify its higher price.

  • HP Compaq 2510p

HP's no-nonsense ultraportable laptop scores for its solid construction and some biz-friendly features, but the Compaq 2510p costs just as much as the flashy, consumer-oriented competition.
