Best tech at SEMA 2009

The 2009 SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show in Las Vegas is more than just hot cars, crazy paint schemes and ridiculously low rides, there's also plenty of high-tech aftermarket equipment around.

Navman MY500XT

Improved, but still deeply flawed. We'd suggest checking out the lesser fruit from the Navman tree first.

Reviews

  • Sygic Mobile Maps for iPhone

With its latest update, Mobile Maps has become our favourite iPhone nav app, but we still have reservations about using the iPhone as a GPS navigator.

  • Lenovo ThinkPad X200

It lacks some basic features you may require — touch pad, optical drive — but the 12.1-inch ThinkPad X200 offers strong performance and the longest battery life we've seen.

  • Navman MY50T

Step up to the MY50T and you'll get a larger than normal 4.7-inch touchscreen, traffic messaging with a lifetime Suna subscription, and Google or TrueLocal searches via a Bluetooth internet connection.

  • Sony Ericsson T707

Call us shallow but we like the little T707 for its body, not for its brains. This sexy handset is great at the basics, but lacks any techy extras.

  • TomTom One 140

Same, same but slightly better than before. Quicker responses and lane guidance justify slight premium over fourth-gen One.

  • Samsung B2700

If the two main features you need in a phone are a decent media player and convenient calling, then the B2700 won't disappoint.

  • LG Arena

LG's touchscreen features class-leading multimedia support, but we're not convinced it makes an excellent phone. Its flashy new interface looks great but tends to make things slower and more difficult.

  • Vodafone Compass

Compass makes an excellent navigation tool for casual users looking for directions a few times a month or year. More frequent users should look to something more robust.

  • GPS traffic messaging FAQ

Traffic messaging for sat nav devices is now available for residents along Australia's eastern seaboard. But what is it? What does it do? Which devices have it? And is it any good?
