Twitter desktop round-up: Top 5 free apps compared

Forgo Twitter.com's dreaded "fail whale". How? Tweet from the desktop. It's more reliable at times, and sophisticated desktop apps are packed with useful management features.

We love the clear touchpad, both for its good looks and intuitive gestures, and we think the Crystal makes a good mobile phone. Shame its camera is a stinker.

  • Motorola VE538

The VE538 makes a great phone for someone who doesn't expect the extras. Motorola keeps the price of the VE538 low, but leaves out important accessories to do so.

  • iLife '09

Apple iLife '09 is a great application suite for simple media organising and editing, and the addition of features like face recognition, geotagging and music lessons makes it worth the update.

  • BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220

The first BlackBerry clamshell looks great and does the basics well, though its lack of 3G data speeds is disappointing.

  • Apple iPhone 3G (16GB)

While parts of the iPhone 3G are superb, there are still some big features missing from this device. If you add up the extras, the iPhone doesn't seem like a phone that everyone can afford.

  • Samsung G800

The G800's chunky, pocket-straining dimensions promises a level of quality that isn't evident in the photos it takes. It's better than average, but well below the best we've seen.

  • Nokia 5610 XpressMusic

In a mobile phone market flooded with media playing handsets the 5610 XpressMusic struggles to stand out.

  • LG Viewty (KU990)

The touchscreen interface and sexier design will be enough to make knees tremble, however, the Viewty's 5-megapixel camera falls short of our expectations.

  • Sony Ericsson K850i

Sony Ericsson's K850i is a decent, if somewhat bulky, camera phone. Its 5-megapixel resolution is on par with the best, but shutter lag and strange navigation keys let it down.
