TomTom Go 950

Top of the range it may be, but features-wise it's a mixed bag — props for the excellent windshield mount, boo for the deleted FM transmitter and MP3 playback, and missing traffic capability. Indeed, with its collection of Australia, NZ, European and North American maps, it's best for frequent flyers.

HTC Hero

With excellent web browsing, email and access to apps, the HTC Hero is one of the few mobiles to truly challenge the iPhone this year.

    The Samsung Jet is an excellent touchscreen device that packs a heap of features that would keep most people entertained for some time.

  • Lexus IS250 Sports Luxury (2009)

    What the IS250 lacks in badge snobbery, it makes up for in good looks, rock-solid quality, neat handling and serenity enough to becalm a frazzled monk. While stuffed with tech, it isn't quite as up-to-date as we'd have liked.

  • Apple iPhone 3GS (32GB)

    The iPhone 3GS is faster and we appreciate the new features and extended battery life, but call quality and 3G reception still need improvement.

  • Sony Ericsson W995

    The W995 under-performs where it counts. The screen is small and of a low-resolution, the web browser doesn't inspire web browsing, and worst of all, the W995 is just too expensive.
