GPS buyer's guide

Prices for GPS devices and apps have come down in the last year and many of us are looking at jumping on the bandwagon. We take a look at how it works, why you should (or shouldn't) buy a GPS, as well as key features to look out for.

Navigon 4350 max

It looks good, priced right and has an excellent Bluetooth hands-free set-up, but a host of minor niggles prevents the 4350 max from being a star.

Reviews

  • Navman MY50T

Step up to the MY50T and you'll get a larger than normal 4.7-inch touchscreen, traffic messaging with a lifetime Suna subscription, and Google or TrueLocal searches via a Bluetooth internet connection.

  • Kogan EziNav G3

Want more for less? Kogan's EziNav G3 delivers with more crashes, more stuttering speech, more disappearing streets and more unusable features.

  • TomTom One 140

Same, same but slightly better than before. Quicker responses and lane guidance justify slight premium over fourth-gen One.

  • Lexus IS250 Sports Luxury (2009)

What the IS250 lacks in badge snobbery, it makes up for in good looks, rock-solid quality, neat handling and serenity enough to becalm a frazzled monk. While stuffed with tech, it isn't quite as up-to-date as we'd have liked.

  • Mio Moov 370

Traffic messaging and Bluetooth hands-free at a reasonable price, but the windshield mount and hard-to-read traffic alerts mean that it fails to scale the heights of its predecessor.

  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Metal Gear Solid 4 is an awe-inspiring synthesis of dramatic storytelling and entertaining gameplay.

  • HP iPAQ 312 Travel Companion

It may not be entirely rational buying a GPS for its beautiful screen and multimedia features, but the 312 almost makes the case despite its numerous bugs and flaws.

  • Nokia N810 Internet Tablet

Its excellent, sleek design doesn't cover for its sluggish performance.
