TomTom for iPhone

With the highest price, fewest features and the same ol' iPhone nav problems, TomTom's app is hard to recommend.

Navigon MobileNavigator for iPhone

With the addition of text-to-speech and the squishing of a few previous bugs, Navigon's MobileNavigator makes sense for the occasional nav use. We still have some reservations about the whole iPhone nav experience, though.

Reviews

  • Kogan EziNav G3

Want more for less? Kogan's EziNav G3 delivers with more crashes, more stuttering speech, more disappearing streets and more unusable features.

  • TomTom One 140

Same, same but slightly better than before. Quicker responses and lane guidance justify slight premium over fourth-gen One.

  • Lexus IS250 Sports Luxury (2009)

What the IS250 lacks in badge snobbery, it makes up for in good looks, rock-solid quality, neat handling and serenity enough to becalm a frazzled monk. While stuffed with tech, it isn't quite as up-to-date as we'd have liked.

  • Apple iPhone 3GS (32GB)

The iPhone 3GS is faster and we appreciate the new features and extended battery life, but call quality and 3G reception still need improvement.

  • Empire: Total War

This strategy sequel is incredibly deep, broad, addictive — and a bit rough around the edges.

  • Garmin Nuvi 260

As per the 260W — an easy to use GPS, with great verbal speed and red light camera warnings which, unfortunately, aren't installed by default — but narrower and AU$100 cheaper.

  • Nokia 6210 Navigator

While the 6210 is solidly built and features fast performance, the lack of a lifetime subscription to turn-by-turn navigation robs the Navigator of what should make it unique in the market.

  • Samsung i560

Seeing or using the i560 is hardly a pulse-racing experience. People looking for a solid phone with navigation will find what they are looking for in the i560. Fashionistas should look elsewhere.

  • Navigation systems: why they're lame, what they need

He's said it before, and he'll say it again: In-car navigation systems are a joke. CNET editor at large Brian Cooley thinks they're not that smart, and some of the features are just useless. Yet, he's not giving up hope. Read on to see which three technologies have him excited for the future of in-car navigation.
