What does an AV receiver actually do?

Hi, sorry to ask what must be a stupid question, but what does a receiver actually do? We're looking at buying the Pioneer 7th gen 42" plasma, and need to buy the accompanying equipment. We just didn't expect to spend almost the same amount on a receiver! Is it worth the investment? I had thought the speakers were the most important in making the most out of a home entertainment system? Appreciate any help or guidance you can offer.

What's the best TV for watching sport?

My boyfriend is driving me insane with his constant nagging about researching TVs. He wants to purchase a new TV, he thinks LCD is more likely, but would buy plasma if that was the best for what he watches, and he wants a 40-inch screen. He wants the best television for watching sport, more precisely football! So you can't blame me for not being too enthusiastic about the purchase. Can you offer any advice apart from the obvious "get a new boyfriend"?

Mobile phones that sync with Outlook

I am looking for a mobile phone that will Sync with Microsoft Outlook, has long talk time and is generally great for business use. I don't care about cameras, texting, ringtones and all that stuff, but am very fond of the slider phones. I'm overwhelmed by choice and range of prices. Please help!
