  • Lexus RX350 Sports Luxury (2009)

Quiet, plush and with enough gadgets on-board — Remote Touch is nice, but where's the hard disk nav and USB folks? — the RX should please most drivers, but it's more of a passenger's car.

  • Toyota Prius i-Tech (2009)

the best tech goodies, such as the solar powered air-con, parking assistance, LED headlights and radar cruise control, on the new Prius are reserved for the i-Tech model.

  • Lexus IS250 Sports Luxury (2009)

What the IS250 lacks in badge snobbery, it makes up for in good looks, rock-solid quality, neat handling and serenity enough to becalm a frazzled monk. While stuffed with tech, it isn't quite as up-to-date as we'd have liked.

  • Honda Insight (2010)

It looks like a Prius, but Honda's hybrid Prius fighter is cheaper, simpler and winning plaudits around the world. Shame it won't be here until late this year, at the earliest.

  • Lexus RX400h (2006)

For those craving a luxury four-wheel drive with an emphasis on luxury rather than cornering elan, then the RX400h is a good choice. It's about as much four-wheel drive as many of us will ever need, and its fuel thrift is pleasing too.

  • Jeep Cherokee Sport diesel (2008)

Built for serious off-roading, not just dashing up the gravel track to your favourite vineyard, the Cherokee demands too many compromises to be a city-bound family hauler.

  • Battery cost holding back hybrids and EVs

BusinessWeek posted a feature entitled "The Electric Car Battery War", looking at the rush to refine Lithium-ion battery technology and posing the question "Should the US government get involved?" We contend, though, that the most important thing is reducing the cost of the batteries.
