  • Lexus RX350 Sports Luxury (2009)

Quiet, plush and with enough gadgets on-board — Remote Touch is nice, but where's the hard disk nav and USB folks? — the RX should please most drivers, but it's more of a passenger's car.

  • Lexus IS250 Sports Luxury (2009)

What the IS250 lacks in badge snobbery, it makes up for in good looks, rock-solid quality, neat handling and serenity enough to becalm a frazzled monk. While stuffed with tech, it isn't quite as up-to-date as we'd have liked.

  • Kodak ESP 7 All-In-One Printer

  • Volkswagen Golf 118TSI Comfortline (Golf VI, 2009)

An eerily similar shape with the marvellous twincharger engine, an auxiliary jack (but no USB) and a better interior at a lower price — slow and cautious evolution at work.

  • Tata Nano

One windscreen wiper, one rear-view mirror, self-levelling headlights, and no rear hatch are part of the final Indian specs of the world's cheapest car.

  • Honda Insight (2010)

It looks like a Prius, but Honda's hybrid Prius fighter is cheaper, simpler and winning plaudits around the world. Shame it won't be here until late this year, at the earliest.
