    Bedecked in black and furnished with IQ Routes, a new faster, snazzier interface and lane guidance, the XL 340 is identical to the One 140 except, you guessed it, it has a wider 4.3-inch screen.

    Compact, correctable, good looking and easy to use, the TomTom XL is a great portable GPS. For AU$100 more there's this Traffic version with, uhh, traffic messaging built-in.

    Griffin's iTrip Autopilot is a relatively cheap and minimalist FM transmitter that connects your iPhone or iPod to a car stereo.

  • Garmin Nuvi 760

    If you're in the market for a GPS navigator with an FM transmitter and MP3 playback, not to mention excellent safety camera warnings, the Nuvi 760 is the one to go for.

  • DLO TuneStik

    Due to strict regulations, consumer FM transmitters will always be somewhat disappointing. If you can't upgrade your car stereo or use an inexpensive cassette deck adapter, at least spend a little more money for a transmitter with better broadcast quality.

  • TomTom Go 720

    Don't let its beautiful body tempt you, the TomTom Go 720 is both too pricey and too buggy. The cliche "beauty is only skin deep" is particularly apt here.

    Nice idea, but you might find listening to the AM radio a tad more enjoyable.
