iRiver B30

Idiosyncratic as hell, the iRiver B30 is a feature-complete player with sparkling sound, but it won't put a fire up the Cupertino boys.

Sangean WFT-1D+

A bit of a jack-of-all-trades, this Sangean offers lots of different radio reception as well as excellent streaming capabilities. At the moment, it's a pretty unique bit of full-width component kit too, and given the feature count it represents terrific value for money.

Reviews

  • Sony Walkman W-series (2GB) NWZ-W202

The Sony W-series Walkman is a great option for active users who want an all-in-one music device to use while working out.

  • iRiver T6

The iRiver T6 is a slender, sleek and well-made MP3 player, though it does lack an extensive feature set. For the casual listener or as a backup player, it's perfectly capable, but audiophiles may want to look elsewhere.

  • Sony Walkman NWZ-B133F (1GB)

The entry-level Sony B-Series Walkman is a solid choice for the gym thanks to its ultracompact design, quick charge function, and integrated FM tuner, but beware the eye strain.

  • Panasonic SC-PT865W

It's got a few weak points, but movie buffs with large DVD libraries will find this a great way to add surround sound to their home theatre set-ups — particularly if wireless rear speakers are a necessity.

  • Samsung S2 Pebble

Have you tried squeezing blood out of a stone? How about music out of a pebble? The Samsung S2 Pebble is a screenless MP3 player with an LED just under the surface that blinks different colours as you listen to music.

  • Creative MuVo T200 (4GB)

It's tough trying to live up to your older sibling. Just ask Creative's MuVo T200, which struggles to match the company's Zen Stone on every spec.

  • Sony NWZ-A818 Walkman

One of the few MP3 players that sound great right out of the box. Users looking for the whole package (sans radio) will be pleased.

  • SanDisk Sansa View (16GB)

If you value features and price over a flashy interface and excellent sound quality, the SanDisk Sansa View digital media player is definitely worth a look. It's easy to use and offers a relatively large screen and a memory expansion option.

  • iRiver B20: first-gen Clix redux

The iRiver B20 may be new, but it looks awfully familiar. In fact, it looks eerily like the first-generation Clix -- not that that's a bad thing.

  • More Clix for iRiver

The new Clix+ is a slightly thinner version of iRiver's second-generation Clix. The big news is its much improved value for money factor, in the States at least.

  • MP3 player shopping checklist

MP3 players are getting cheaper with bigger onboard storage and wider format support. We reckon that 24-bit MP3 players could be the next wave. For now, all digital audio players are still at 16-bit, with micro jukebox players expected to be the in thing this year.
