Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR1

If you're looking for a compact zoom camera, the DMC-ZR1 is one of the best, if you can forgive some performance issues in terms of burst speed and average video quality.

New Lumix range is thin and zoomy

Panasonic's latest additions to the 2009 Lumix range includes an update to the popular FZ28 superzoom camera and a new ultra-thin lens design.

Reviews

  • Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W290

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W290 is a compelling package. Unless you're extraordinarily picky about your photo quality, it's a great pocket camera at a reasonable price with a solid combination of features, usability and design.

  • Olympus Mju Tough 6000

Though we tried to like the Tough 6000 thanks to its candybar styling, it's a fairly lacklustre camera in the performance stakes.

  • Olympus Mju 9000

The Mju 9000 is one of the nicest Olympus compacts we've tested. It's the smallest camera you can get with 10x optical zoom, and we would recommend it unreservedly if it was a little cheaper and didn't have as many issues with noise.

  • Olympus Mju Tough 8000

While the Tough 8000 may be the most rugged camera on the market, it doesn't mean it's the best in terms of image quality and performance.

  • Olympus Tough Smart 1050SW

The 1050SW is a rugged adventure camera designed for swimmers and skiers, waterproof to three metres with 10.1 megapixels and tap control. Quirky features aside, the Olympus works just like any normal point-and-shoot.

  • Canon EOS 50D

The 50D is remarkably similar to the 40D in terms of performance, looks and features — but if you can spare the extra cash, it's a much nicer package.

  • Panasonic HDC-HS9

This year's high-def hybrid camcorder from Panasonic is of the much more useful SD card/hard-disk variety. There's 60GB of on-board storage and 1080p recording at 25fps.

  • Nikon Coolpix S520

Despite its suave looks, the Nikon Coolpix S520 is a safe pair of hands rather than a glamorous catch. A light feature set and an absence of sexy characteristics mean it fails to stand out on any criteria except price — but it is a solid-gold bargain.
