ISPs: Govt porn filters 'could cripple internet'

Broadband providers Internode and iiNet have hit out against the Federal government's ISP-level content filtering initiative — a scheme that could cripple Australia's high-speed internet access, according to one exec.

  Communications Minister Stephen Conroy this afternoon announced the names of six ISPs that will participate in the Federal Government's internet filter trial — but the nation's largest ISPs are not on the list.

  The leaders of two of Australia's largest ISP's see a viable business model in offering free or discounted broadband connectivity, sponsored by advertisements targeted according to a user's web surfing habits.

• iiNet to offer mobile phone services?

  Broadband ISP iiNet is considering reselling mobile phone and mobile data services. The company also hopes to replace Optus as the second largest broadband player in Australia, according to Greg Bader, the company's chief technology officer.
