  • Lexus IS250 Sports Luxury (2009)

What the IS250 lacks in badge snobbery, it makes up for in good looks, rock-solid quality, neat handling and serenity enough to becalm a frazzled monk. While stuffed with tech, it isn't quite as up-to-date as we'd have liked.

  • Honda Civic Hybrid sedan (2006)

Identified by the dinner plate wheels and skinny tyres, this greener Civic features a 1.3-litre engine mated to a battery pack and electric motor to return an official combined rating of 4.6L/100km and 109g of CO2 per km.

  • Honda Civic Sport sedan (2006)

The Sport version of the Civic sedan features a bigger 2.0-litre heart, as well as the futuristic styling and dashboard, MP3 capable CD stacker and auxiliary jack seen elsewhere in the range.

Featuring a space age dash, distinctive styling, MP3 capable CD player and an auxiliary jack, but no direct iPod access, this generation of Civic rescued the nameplate after years in the automotive wilderness.

  • Honda Insight (2010)

It looks like a Prius, but Honda's hybrid Prius fighter is cheaper, simpler and winning plaudits around the world. Shame it won't be here until late this year, at the earliest.
