Whether you want to buy a home theatre in a box or go the components route, you'll need to decide which way is best for you right from the start.

Altec Lansing inMotion Classic

The Altec Lansing inMotion Classic offers a stylish way to play your iPod or iPhone around your home. It sounds remarkable for its size, but it lacks the low-end oomph of a larger system.

Reviews

  • Cygnett Maestro Portable Speaker System for iPhone & iPod

The Maestro does a lot of things right for its AU$189.95 asking price. It produces good sound and is cross-compatible with a range of iPods and iPhones, but it's also light on exciting features.

  • Panasonic SC-HC3 Compact Stereo System

Panasonic's attractive SC-HC3 combines CD and iPod playback with excellent audio quality, although iPhone owners should shop elsewhere.

  • Bose SoundDock 10

While it's expensive and isn't loaded with features, the Bose SoundDock 10 is classy looking and sounds excellent for a compact iPod/iPhone speaker.

  • Logitech Speaker System Z320

Logitech's Speaker System Z320 offers good looks and decent sound quality at a reasonable price. The speakers are rather lacking on the bass front, though.

  • Altec Lansing inMotion Max

For its price, the inMotion Max is a very decent iPhone-compatible speaker dock. It makes up for the lack of features with decent audio quality and portability.

  • Panasonic SC-PT870

The Panasonic SC-PT870 is a good system, offering decent-quality surround sound and very good picture performance.

  • Sony Ericsson W995

The W995 under-performs where it counts. The screen is small and of a low-resolution, the web browser doesn't inspire web browsing, and worst of all, the W995 is just too expensive.

  • Sony Ericsson MBS-200

The sound produced by the MBS-200 isn't going to replace a good sound system at home, but it is enough to rock out to in your bedroom, or to take away with you on a holiday with friends.
