Today the periodic table is shown off publicly for the first time and a computer virus named after one of the most famous artists of all time fails to deliver on its hype.

It's also the day that in 1981 famous American news anchor Walter Cronkite signed off for the final time from CBS Evening News. In 1967, Joseph Stalin's daughter, Svetlana Alliluyeva, defected to the USA, while 10 years prior Ghana celebrated its independence from Britain.
