Telstra offers Next G via USB

Telstra has quietly started offering two new ways of accessing its new nation-wide third-generation Next G mobile network, with two new USB modems now on sale.

When the telco launched the network several months ago, the only way of accessing the up to 3.6Mbps speeds on offer was to buy a PCMCIA laptop card or access services through a compatible mobile phone.

But now the telco has started selling two new modems that connect to users' USB ports. One is the size of a USB memory stick and is designed for use with laptops that don't have a PCMCIA port.

The second is a larger modem similar in size to any other ADSL or cable broadband modem that is designed for use in more fixed scenarios where the user is unlikely to take their PC on the road. It also needs to be plugged into a mains power point.

The memory stick sized modem is available for AU$299 -- the same price as the PCMCIA card -- while the larger fixed modem sells for AU$249, according to Telstra's Web site.

7.2 usb modem has been great for me. I have no complaints to make. The connection hasn't dropped out once, excellent coverage, portable (not fixed to one address). Untill now I have been paying for two internet connections. One at my house, and another at my parents. Not anymore. The usb modem works just fine at both places, and it works out cheaper than having two adsl connections. Good value for money. Service is great, and the staff are ok to deal with if you have a problem.

As I live in a remote area I was only able to get satellite for my broadband services. I received my USB card after already opting for the modem. Bigpond were great in changing it all over for me and I have been very happy with it so far and is especially great as it is saving me money and is much faster. I love the fact that I can sit outside on my vernadah instead of locking myself in the office. Great product, great speeds and great service.

After waiting several weeks my USB 3g card (memory stick) arrived. Several attempts at installation bombed out. Then a further 11/2 hours on the phone to Telstra bigpond. All to no avail- many apologies and was told to wait for an engineer to call. Apparently Telstra are only getting about 50% success rate with installations.

I'm still waiting for the new 3G card to replace the old one they sold me because the other wasn't available. I wonder how many USBs they have? 3G is probably great but who would know if you can't get access.

Great news!!! It would have been nice to have a USB modem at launch. Teltsra missed out on a lot of sales because of this.
