Telstra T6

By Joseph Hanlon on 16 April 2009

It's cheap and cheerful, and compatible with Telstra's Next G network which is more than you can say for many phones in this price range.

Design

For a cheap and cheerful, the Telstra T6 is a sexy little number. No, not iPhone sexy, but the faux stainless steel finish elevates this phone's aesthetic a notch or two, and its matte-black plastic battery cover helps the T6 not look like the budget-priced phone it is.

The keypad is flat and definition-less except for a braille dot on the number five, though this hasn't hindered us using the pad quickly or accurately. The numbers aren't uniform in shape, but it's the asterisk and hash keys that suffer as they're the smallest, and it's better that these less used keys are harder to find than the alpha-numeric keys which will be used constantly when punching in text messages and phone numbers.

Its low resolution display is deceptively sharp and colourful. Some of the edges around larger fonts look jagged, but overall the T6 does a good job of masking this cost-cutting screen. Even watching Foxtel TV on the phone is fine, though the picture is heavily obscured when viewed off-angle, so you'll want to keep the screen aligned correctly while viewing.

One feature many of our readers in rural areas will be pleased to see is the external antenna connection on the rear of the phone, next to the 2-megapixel camera lens. Hidden behind a switch, this socket will connect the T6 to an antenna to boost the available signal range. With this attachment the T6 gets Telstra's Blue Tick, indicating superior range over regular mobile handsets.

Features

Expect this section of the review to be short and sweet. Telstra lists the available features on the side of the retail box and when it lists "Bluetooth 1.2" as a selling point, you know the company is scraping the bottom of the spec sheet.

The most noteworthy feature is the T6's compatibility with the Telstra Next G network. For AU$129 outright, you get a phone that downloads data at 3.6Mbps and can connect to the growing range of Telstra online services, like BigPond Music and TV, Foxtel Mobile TV and WhereIs Maps. Visual features like maps and streaming video are best viewed on phones with larger screens and sharper resolution, but the T6 does a decent job of displaying what it can.

Performance

The good news is that the T6 is a fantastic mobile phone, even if it isn't the all-in-one smartphone solution we're seeing in phones of late. We're happy with the quality of audio during calls, and we're told by those we called that they could hear us loud and clear. The phone's manufacturer ZTE estimates battery life at three hours talk-time when using the Next G network.

Navigating the phone's menus and settings is zippy, though it doesn't attempt much in the way of graphical flare and animated menus. Web browsing is fine, though the browser is a simple mobile browser and best for viewing sites optimised for mobile phones. CNET Australia's mobile site looks good, even though the browser wraps the text and pushes the menus and photos around a bit.

Overall

The T6 is the phone we never expected to see from Telstra, a phone carrier with a reputation for its high prices. The price tag on the T6 is spot on for a phone with this feature set, and the Telstra Blue Tick should offer those in remote areas some peace of mind. The T6 would make a great phone for teenagers; it doesn't look so bad and it offers the power to watching TV on the go, though it sorely lacks the multimedia aspects of more expensive models.

    • Good: Reception, Price, Functionality, Battery life
    • Bad: Keypad, Screen and backlight control

Well, I bit the bullet and bought one for my wife to test as the guinea pig as her old Nokia POS was useless (GSM only).

We live in Country vic and even my old N70 wasnt much good here either so a Next G solution was inevitable.

The wifes phone was a revelation (Good) and a week later I joined her and bought a black one for $99 all up, Add $20 for a 1 gig MicroSD and this becomes a nice phone with excellent reception compared to more expensive name brand NextG phones.

Screen res leave a little to be desired but if I want to surf the net I have a Mac and almost all of telstras content looks fine.

The external Antennae socket is a definite bonus.

    Battery life is excellent.

Ring tones etc are awful but easily fixed and ZTE has a bonus tone pack for free download.

My only real criticism is the awful action on the keypad, it is uncertain and feels nasty and the keypad is different in feel and action between my wifes and my own although the PC interface is ordinary but functional on XP.

Shame theres no Mac OS software for this phone yet but they charitably include Mac drivers s you can pillage the phone manually.

I think its also important to note that I dont use a case for the phone and my wife does and so far my phone looks better for the wear.

Its a cheap phone with plenty of bang for buck and at $99 plus a Mem card its definitely a good deal.

Question is though, what OS does the thing run?

    Happy Tony.

8/10 for this phone after a months use.

    • Good: Fine as a BASIC phone and not a bad looking unit in the red colour!
    • Bad: JoinMe software is useless, weak blue tooth, poor coverage as a blue tick rural phone

Surprisingly good media sound and as a basic phone it works fine but that is about it. The blue tick reception is rubbish, blue tooth function VERY touchy and weak and the handset randomly turns on and off. JoinMe software is rubbish - just won't connect to calendar properly, very intermittent connectivity and no support/firmware upgrades for this software anywhere to be found. Glad I only paid $49 for it while I wait for an affordable Nokia to come out!!

    • Good: Nothing its a piece of ****!
    • Bad: Everything!

This phone is THE WORST phone ever! Ive had two exactly the same and both have randomly called people and wasted my credit, The JOIN ME thing DOESNT WORK AT ALL, It deletes my pictures and songs randomly then decides to bring them back and it turns itself on and off! THIS PHONE IS A PIECE OF JUNK AND SHOULDNT EVEN BE IN SHOPS!
P.S this phone doesnt even deserve a 1 it deserves like a -1000

    • Good: lots of java apps work, USB cable with it
    • Bad: internet

this is pretty cool i think the keypad is easy to use and the screen is way bigger than my old phone. Also the camera is awesome and i love all of it except the internet.

    • Good: Internet speedz
    • Bad: Screen

the t6 is a simple compact mobile but the screen needs to be bigger and the design needz to be more of a rectangle, overall good phone but still needz work

  • Tino gave 4/10 on 30/09/2009 23:25 Report abuse

    • Good: Functions well and it works-ish
    • Bad: Connectivity

Will often turn on and off without notice and wont receive or send calls or messages. Also you can't turn the shutter sounds off the camera or video camera -_-' will do for an interim phone

  • bluey brink gave 4/10 on 28/09/2009 19:25 Report abuse

    • Good: cheap ,call quality and ear volume
    • Bad: service forget the blue tick

    • Good: okay
    • Bad: coverage

Phone is okay, enough bells and whistles for a non mobile junkie, main complaint is that with an ancient nine year old Nokia, I actually got a better coverage, can use the Nokia at home, but not the T6, thought it was supposed to be better.
