TomTom iPhone car kit now in US, UK, EU

TomTom's car mounting cradle for iPhone has been quietly snuck into the Apple Store. Unfortunately for us antipodeans, though, that's overseas Apple Stores, not the local version.

Retailing for US$120 (AU$130) in the States, £100 (AU$177) in the UK and €100 (AU$162) in Europe, inclusive of shipping, the car kit includes an updated GPS receiver, speaker and microphone, as well as a 12-volt charger. It unfortunately doesn't include a copy of the app, which retails for AU$100, pushing the cost well into price range of an entry-level stand-alone GPS.

According to TomTom's US representatives, the Apple Store product page is for pre-orders and TomTom US has not yet announced a specific date for the product's availability. If Apple's claim that the product ships in two to three weeks is true, Americans should be seeing the kit sooner rather than later. Poms and Europeans will have to wait a little bit longer, as shipping times are estimated at between four and six weeks for them.

We're still waiting to hear back from TomTom Australia as to when the kit will be available locally.

These people at Tomtom are fools. I registered way back before the app was available for updates on the product. No communication since, at all from them. I found out the app was available on my own, and when you call Tomtom here in Australia, they are clueless as to when the cradle will be available here.

does anyone know if the tom tom cradle will work with the co pilot app for the iphone?

Even if we do get the iPhone holder, will using the TomTom app on the iPhone in car be legal in Victoria? (Proposed legislation suggests that a driver will get fined if he/she touches their mobile phone while operating their car for any reason).
