TomTom One (4th generation)

Both the One and XL are great GPS units: compact, correctable, good looking and easy to use. At RRP we'd pick the narrow screen One every time though.

Got one yesterday, and used it yesterday night. I was first introduced to Tomtom thru a mate, he let me borrow his OneXL a few months back, and it was flawless, so i thought i'd get this one which is meant to be indentical to the new XL version 2 (plus its got text to sppech, so thats oen advantage it has over the older OneXL). Anyway, when i used it last night and took the M5 tunnel, it lost its signal for about 2 minutes.... something my mates older OneXL did not. And when i got the Sydney CBD, thats when things started acting funny. the Tomtom's screen kept on saying you were on another street, and kept rotating. I got to the location because i knew that area of the city already. I parked, and when i had to go back home, i took the longer route i know of, but still wanted to turn on the One to see how it went.... it got a slight signal when out of the parking lot, but still wasnt a fixed signal, it cut off in a matter of seconds, it was only when you were out of high buildings (out of the cbd) that it got a gps signal.

One thing i noticed when i was looking at the the One and the XL version 2, at Westfields.... the One had no gps signal whatsover, but the XL did... (this was in the lower levels of westfields where signals are harder to reach) i thought the One they had on display was just broken since i thought they were both identical. But if thats a sign, then maybe the XL version 2 has a better antenna of some sorts, if this is true, then I would suggest spending a little more on that.
overall, its still a great navigator.

    • Good: Good UI, easy to use, flawless outside the cbd (except the M5 tunnel). Great text to speech, lots of preferences to choose from, did i say you can download different voices? one being Borat! But i'm told he doesnt say street names.
    • Bad: Really bad in the city CBD (lost a solid signal on liverpool st, at the corners of george, castlereigh, sussex and kent st area). If someone had no idea around the cbd, they would probably have gotten lost. Best to study the route beforehand (which you can do thru the device) if you're going thru the cbd.
Lost a signal in the M5 tunnel, the tomtom said it lost the signal for about 3 minutes even though the screen was still showing where i was so this was kind of odd.
Sometimes chooses longer routes rather than obvious easy ones...
sometimes hard to find certain options in the UI, but practice makes perfect.

Excellent, having owned a now defunct Navman PiN for the last few years this little gem is a breath of fresh air, crisp loud voice, text to speech [reads street names] excellent tutorials, great coverage and a super slim and neat unit make this a great GPS unit. Add to that the TomTom share application and you are sure to have no future problems with bad mapping. Two thumbs up.

    • Good: Small, sleek, easy GUI navigation, loud clear voice.
    • Bad: Small screen maybe hard for some people to view clearly, keyboard input is a bit small if you have big fingers.
