TomTom XL 340

By Derek Fung on 29 May 2009

Bedecked in black and furnished with IQ Routes, a new faster, snazzier interface and lane guidance, the XL 340 is identical to the One 140 except, you guessed it, it has a wider 4.3-inch screen.

User rating:9

TomTom's XL 340 features a 4.3-inch screen but is otherwise identical to the One 140. Both, aside from their new blacker-than-black bodies, are externally no different from their forebears the fourth-gen One and the second-gen XL.

The more significant upgrades occur under the skin, with faster processors and more memory resulting in improved performance and response. In addition to the already standard text-to-speech and compact design that folds up nicely into almost any glovebox, lane guidance and IQ Routes have added to the features roster.

We'll have a XL 340 review up shortly, until then check out our One 140 review.

    • Good: Screen, easy to use
    • Bad: nothing as of yet

I use my gps for everyday purposes for getting from point a to b, it is really convinient and works very efficiently, if you take a wrong turn it will search alternative route very easily.

I say its value for money and m happy with it.

    • Good: Wide screen, Quick re-rought
    • Bad: IQ Routes not as good as they say, hard to add a faviourt

I Q Rougtes are totally not any here near as good as Tomtom say they are Far from it.

I find it Very Difult to add a faviourt Location cant seen to add a precies Location.

Maps are up-to-date for my rural area seems have all roads so far.

No SD card slot so can add more data so if need store more maps it may be a problem.

Overpriced For What you get $449 retail Beware dont pay full Price!! Bargin, bargin, bargin
I got it $399 so by no means pay full price!

    • Good: Road corrections,good speaker
    • Bad: Poor menu, 1980's graphics except for 3d lanes

Complicated menus, one accidental touch and you're lost in the menu system or planning a route you didn't want.
Cannot get me to my home even if I drive around the block.
Poor graphics (hello the age of HD)except for the pop up lane guidance. Downloadable voices are low rent the rest you have to pay for. No external memory slot for SD cards etc.
Basic model for an exorbitant price.
With the road corrections downloadable/uploadable is great but we as consumers should not have to block roads etc that have been blocked for 20 years or so.
Mine is going back to the store for a full refund.

    • Good: Easy to use, wide clear screen
    • Bad: No Australian Route Planner on Web Site

Never having used a GPS before I have found this very easy to use and a handy device when travelling.
Comparing this to my friends Garmin I have found two annoying faults.
    1. The spoken street names are not as clear as the Garmin.
    2. The online Route Planner does not include Australia where as my friend has just finished planning a trip from Perth to Canberra via Adelaide & Melbourne and downloaded it to his Garmin.

My wife & I find the spoken street names very amusing at times but it does show a lack of attention to detail and the lack of route planning for Australia is a very big minus. Other than those two faults we find the Tom Tom is good and the ability to correct the maps is handy.

One thing we had to turn off was the speed zone adviser as it kept telling us that an open highway was a 50k zone when it is actually a 100k zone with bush all around.
