2008 was a big year for Canadian mobile makers Research in Motion. The company released its first HSDPA capable smartphone, the BlackBerry Bold, and its first touchscreen device, the BlackBerry Storm. A smaller, but no less notable milestone was the release of the first BlackBerry to break the standard candybar form factor. The Pearl Flip 8220 marks RIM's first major attempt to appeal to a market outside its stable of CEOs and travelling business people, looking to encourage students and home-makers to BlackBerry-town.
