So you've decided you're going to get a portable GPS device, but what features should you look out for and which brand is best at what?

do any of the lower priced units (or any unit) advise you what speed zone you are in & will it let you know if you are over the limit . without having to preset the speed zones

Thinking of buying Garmin nuvi 265w (JBHifi $369) will be going to UK in 6 months. Does Garmin European maps cover UK, or do I have to buy separate maps? Never had a GPS before what do you think of this unit?

Derek, you forgot to mention that the POI data for Garmin units was actually done in house by GME when they were the distributor, and since Garmin has taken over distribution the data has not been updated for 6+ months.
Please ask Garmin if they plan to supply regular updated POI data like their competitors. -

Hi Neal, regarding POIs and non-city navigation, we'll be addressing some of these issues in our upcoming feature on the two digital maps available in Australia, Whereis and Navteq. Stay tuned.

Some good info basic features but it doesn't cover enough of the features I'm looking for. I live in a rural area and I haven't found a GPS yet which will let some one enter my address and have the GPS navigate them to it. the closest is Garmin which will locate an intersection 5km away. As for Tom Tom or Navman nether comes within 100km. So whats my options?
I like the Garmin feature which alows me to put in the Lat and Longnatude of the location I want to go to. But is Garmin the only one that does this?
What about:
route options such as "avoid toll roads".
POI and ability to add custom POI
We dont all want a GPS just for city use so what features are there that are useful once the user ventures beyond the city limits? I'm sure the likes of the grey nomads in their caravans and motorhomes would apreciate a POI option of say:locate the nearest free campsite/caravan park or Blackwater dump point. When was the last time on a trip you wondered were the next toilet stop might be. Are these sorts of points of interest available if so on which GPSs?
