With Anzac Day in just a few days, we wanted to present you with a list of some of the best Aussie war movies on Blu-ray.

Alas, it wasn't to be: great classics such as Gallipoli, Kokoda, 1915, Australians at War and Blood Oath are only available on DVD ... if at all.

However, there are a couple available and we have managed to scrape together a collection of Blu-ray war films for you to enjoy over the long weekend as we remember our heroes, both past and present.

To my mind there are a few glaring ommisions.....

1. The Thin Red Line, for those that found SPR a little too sentimental, Terrance Malick's portrayal of the Guadalcanal Campaign is often seen by many as the superior work. The Criterion Blu-ray release is pure reference material.

2. Das Boot, scheduled for release on July 5 this title has pre-order written all over it and surely demands the list in this article be amended accodingly.

3. Three Kings, a scathing indictment of US foreign Policy in Iraq post Desert Storm. With the subsequent invasion of Iraq in 2003 Three Kings seems even more poignant.

According to their various vendors, these films haven't been released in Australia on Blu-ray.

No love for Full Metal Jacket by Stanley Kubrick?

This is RIDICULOUS!! We are celebrating the ANZAC weekend with American movies! Surely the classics of Gallipoli and 800 light horsemen should be on the list.

Neither Gallipoli or The Lighthorsemen are available on Blu-ray. The article even mentions the lack of Australian war movies on Blu-ray in the second paragraph.

With any luck, one day we'll get some high-def remasters.

WHAT THE HELL as if "Saving Private Ryan" didn't make it! That is one of the goriest war movies if ever seen - and the best!

Hi Anton,

Thanks for your feedback! This list only includes films that are available on Blu-ray locally; and unfortunately, Saving Private Ryan isn't. I agree, though, it's a great film.

The Pacific and Band of Brothers would both serve as a compliment together. Though they are seperate conflicts and seperate focuses, the realism of a war in two worlds in the same era from the perspective of mainly the United States surely provide a nice viewing with depth.
