Toshiba Satellite Pro P100
By on 14 February 2006
Toshiba’s Satellite Pro P100 is a competent multimedia workhorse that could easily replace most regular desktop PCs. It boasts powerful graphics and storage subsystems, while the Harmon/Kardon integrated speaker set beats most competing offerings hands-down.

had the P100 for a month now and all going well. great machine, and as far as i can tell few people have problems with them. I was not worried about looks, but have felt quite happy at the number of people who are and compliment you in passing on the copper top; lots of interest.
- Good: Great desktop replacement
lots of power and storage
3 Kg - not heavy for the size, and just about portable.
seems solidly built - Bad: battery life is low
- Good: Great desktop replacement

Poor quality and service
I bought this machine in late Jan 07. In one month's time it refuses to start each morning. Took it back to authorised repairer for repair. Take 3 weeks still not repaired. Toshiba and repairer pointing fingers at each other - Toshiba said spare parts availalbe but repairer said they haven't received any. Vow not to buy any Toshiba notebook in future. PC User magazine April 2007 issue "Warranty finger-pointing woes" has similar customer complaint on poor Toshiba repair service.- Good: great spec, good price
- Bad: poor quality, poor service

I'm being optimistic and giving Toshiba another chance, as this is a class-action lawsuit replacement for another laptop that started out looking great, but ended in disaster. This is an outstanding machine for someone looking for a desktop replacement to do high-end graphics, 3D modeling, and playing graphically intensive games. I've loaded it with all kinds of design software and this machine shines. It seems to be well constructed and most of the design features make it stand out from other laptops I've used. Since I don't do intensive typing the keyboard layout doesn't bother me except for the small right side return key. I almost never use a numeric keypad on any computer and wonder why the designers felt it had to be in the same place as a desktop keyboard when the deck has enough real estate to put a full keypad separate from the keyboard.
My computer worked great for the first 6 weeks and then I started having problems. At first it seemed like a driver issue and Toshiba's support people tried to implicate Windows XP and even wanted me to reinstall Windows. It turns out one of the memory cards was bad. I had to find this out on my own and Toshiba support was in denial about it still pushing me to reinstall Windows XP. Don't these people realize how long it takes to reinstall and configure software? I'm on an extended business trip and need the machine. It works OK on one memory card. There is a Toshiba service provider in town and they ordered the new memory card after I put a deposit on it so they don't get stuck with it in case I'm wrong. The alternative is to mail the computer to Louisville. Right! Brought it to the service center, they installed the card, and I thought I was in business. Seems they either put in another faulty card or didn't seat it properly. Memtest says bad memory, though at least now I can run it without removing the bad card...only crashed twice with blue screens. I'm taking it back to the service center today. Wish me luck. Unless this is a design flaw that burns out memory cards, Toshiba isn't to blame on this one as Samsung made the memory cards. At my billing rate, the amount of time wasted dealing with the original Toshiba laptop's problems cost me over $6,000. So far this one is over $1,000. These companies really need to get their act together.- Good: A beauty to look at. I got the copper top. People will compliment you.
Outstanding graphic performance on a machine with 2GB RAM, a 7100 RPM hard drive, and a 256MEG graphics card.
Good price for the quality of hardware. - Bad: Battery life
You can't store this machine in a bag in Stand By or Hibernate mode. It WILL turn on and can lead to a major problem. It must be completely shut down. This problem keeps it from earning an 8-9. Toshiba, fix this! I hope it can be done with a software upgrade.

Silly re-start feature
The re-start feature can't be disabled. It has resulted in auto-starts while the computer is stowed in a bag. This depletes an already short-life batter and causes overheating. It's a shame that Toshiba doesn't allow the feature to be disabled. Just this feature alone is so annoying that I wouldn't recommend the P100
- Good: Solid performance
- Bad: Silly re-start feature that automatically brings the machine out of hibernation when the lid is opened.
Really short battery life

Very satisfied
I bought this to replace a very old desktop system I had. So far I am very happy with the difference. I have used other laptops and believe this one is the best so far.
