LG 50PB2DR  -- one of the model's requiring a software upgrade

LG Electronics Australia has announced that owners of LG TVs with integrated digital tuners will require a software upgrade to stop issues with "frozen transmissions".

Reports surfaced over the weekend of pictures seizing up during certain programs while owners tried to watch digital broadcasts on the Nine Network in Sydney and Melbourne.

LG has spent the last two days conducting tests and has determined the problem to be a software issue which can cause the integrated tuners on its digital TVs to intermittently lock-up or freeze under certain signal transmissions.

The company has started notifying customers of the issue and is offering a free, in-home software upgrade to rectify the problem on affected models. It is also working with free-to-air networks to ensure that no further disruptions are experienced by viewers.

The software glitch is appearing in televisions with integrated digital tuners purchased after August 2006 with serial numbers beginning with 608, 609, 610, 611, 612, 701, 702 or 703.

The complete list of affected models includes:

  • LCD TVs: 32LC2D, 37LC2D, 42LC2D, 42LC2DR
  • Plasma TVs: 42PC1DV, 42PC1DG, 42PX4DV, 50PC1D, 50PC3D, 50PB2DR, 60PC1D, 60PY2D
  • Rear Projection TVs: 56DC1D, 62DC1D, 62DC1DA
  • CRT TVs: 32FS4D

Customers with one of the above listed sets can register for the free, in-home software update on www.lghdtv.com.au/softwareupdate or call LG's customer service centre on 1800 643 156.

LG has advised customers experiencing "freeze" problems prior to obtaining the software upgrade to turn their television off, unplug it at the wall power socket and leave it off for approximately 20 minutes to allow the unit to completely power down before turning it on again. Once the television re-boots, normal viewing should be possible.

I purchased a 42PX5D in August 2006 which also freezes on Channel Nine. Serial number begins with 606. Is this problem wider spread than is being reported?

I purchased 2 LG Plasma TV's about 3 weeks ago it has frozen on the 12/04/07, and yes channel 9 is to balme. Turned off an on and unpluged for a bit still frozen. I have also bought other LG products and have had no problems. I believe that the retailers have to be liable or the manafacture, for not advising the consumer of the defective product, Which they are aware of. I will advise how I go on obtaining the software upgrade. I have been sold a defective product. Legealy they are liable to provide the upgrade.

I have an LG 42PC1dg It froze about 3wks ago and sucessfully reset it. Registered with LG to have the free upgrade and received an email stating a technician would make contact in a few days. This was on the 20/4/07. Prime was the culprit and it just froze again tonight 2/5/07 watching Prime. Still no word from LG. If ph call doesn't work then they have lost my faith

Brought a 50PC1D 32 days ago. The other day, Prime was causing the TV to freeze, or changed itself from channel 6 to 354. LG confimed to me tonight there is an issue with the Prime TV transmission. They are still looking into it. Channel 9 jumps and slows down often, but no freezing. Also just got a dead pixel today, which LG said they will fix.

Anyone waiting on Customer Service from LG - don't bother! I've been waiting 8 months. I'm now dealing with ACCC & Dept. Fair Trading. JB Hi Fi admitted they knew about the fault but accept no liability. LG have ignored us for nearly a year and TV freezes on Prime & Ten mostly. It also has synching issues! I know consumer law very well so guys, just go straight to Dept fair Trading because the more complaints formally listed the better (for us)

I have just bought an LG LCD 47 inch TV, Model LG47LB9DF and guess what, immediately the signal freezes, both picture and sound and now it has patchy green squares over the entire screen after 3 days use. It seems to be influenced by light switches going on -off or any electrical appliance causes interference when swithed on or off. Even when no additional appliance is switched on it freezes etc. So what now? Does any one else experience this problem?

I purchased my LG 50pc5d less than a week ago and I get a black screen every morning until I unplug it for 20+ mins. I have called LG and they state they are to busy leave a number and lg will call back yet no calls yet. Emailed lg and still no reply. Disappointed and taking it back as soon as I have somebody here to take it off the wall...

We have a 42lc2dr and have not had a problem until recently (purchased in 09/07). Problem is no more access to digital channels and loss of audio from TV and other inputs (HDMI, AV, etc). Have reported it as a warranty repair and waiting on dealer to arrange pickup.

I have a 42pc1dg purchased 15/12/06 and it has been fine until today, it just froze whilst watching channel 9 (win tv) it had been on all morning on ABC and I switched to 9 and watched for 30 mins as soon as the program ended video froze and I just got audio. The only button that works is on/off and that has about a 5-10 sec delay. Every time I switch on its goes straight back onto 9 plays for a sec and freezes again. unhappy to say the least.

Our LG 42 Inch LCD TV also froze on us this week. I followed the instructions on the LG website to report the issue, got an email from the local service agent the next day and credit to all involved, the issue has been resolved fully, painlessly and at no expense to me. Problem is that they need a Software upgrade.....nothing major. LG all the way

Freeze Frustrated
03/08/2008 10:24 PM

I purchased my 32LC2D in Sept 06 and had some freezing problems early 07. Store sent technician out to install software. Then fine, but now has started freezing again on prime and I have had no TV all night. Tried all suggestions then it went bang and screen turned pink then back to frozen screen again. Hate this TV and will not purchase LG again.
