Samsung LA46M81BDX User reviews

By Ty Pendlebury on 09/08/2007

More Samsung reviews , RRP: AU$5499.00

The good:

  • Amazing black levels
  • Bright, impressive picture
  • Cheapest 46in LCD yet

The bad:

  • Tuner images are soft
  • Even HD images can be noisy
  • Movie Plus noise reduction is awful

The bottomline:

The Samsung LA46M81BDX is a 46 inch LCD screen with magnificent black levels and a fine picture but it's not the final word on detail.

howardhill, you're not alone with movie plus issues. I've read on some other forums, and I have found myself (I have only 40" however), that even sometimes when it says Movie Plus is off, it's still on. If you're getting that annoying picture distortion, just switch movie mode on, then off again, and that should sort it out. Later models are supposed to have firmware upgrade to solve the problem, earlier models I think you can ring Samsung and get upgrade sent out to you. I was going nuts like yourself, fiddling with picture settings and lamenting for ages that I'd spent $3000 on this higher end TV, only to have problems with picture distortion. Now that I've got it sorted out, the TV has been fantastic. Turned black enhance off however because it was causing flickering of black objects against white/bright backgrounds.

Pros: great black contrasting, vibrant picture colour, TV looks good, 3 HDMI inputs.

Cons: movie mode

the anonymous guy who bought it for $3400-well done. the price of this tv differs heaps-check out jb and harvey norman, they're the cheapest places i've seen it so far

Pros: looks really great side by side other sets. it definetly has a better picture than other comparable sets out there.

Cons: has movie-plus issues-hopefully they wi be fixed when i buy mine.

i wouldnt get this tv. its not that its a bad tv, its just my personal preference. anything above 42" i would go plasma not LCD. If u compare similar HDTV's side by side, one LCD and one plasma, u will notice a big difference. Especially at 46". Plasma's usually have a higher contrast ratio. so u will notice that plasma's contain better quality darker and brighter colours. if u want a tv over 42" and with the highest resolution, aim for plasma.

Pros: samsung makes awsome tv's

Cons: LCD at 46"

the guy who bought it for $3,400.00 you're dreamin mate. If u really did, tell us where... The 40" M8 is advertised for $3999.00 in todays retrovision catalogue. To pay $3,900.00 for the 46" is definitely a bargain... well done

I run a DVI-to-HDMI cable (HDMI @ LCD end) which cost about $40. I havent had any issues from day one with my Vista Media Center displaying on my Samsung. I am in the future!

Purchused the M8 46" today for $3,900.00 which i think is a good price... Not overly impressed with the picture produced from the Xbox 360. However there are better component cables availiable which which i hope will solve this minor problem.

Pros: stunning HDTV

Cons: xbox 360 graphics
