Philips 42PFL9703D User reviews

By Ty Pendlebury on 22/07/2008

More Philips reviews , RRP: AU$3299.00

The good:

  • Decent picture quality
  • Good blacks and off-axis viewing
  • Great design
  • Four HDMI inputs

The bad:

  • High price
  • Set-up wizard can make picture worse
  • 100Hz mode is poor
  • Minimum of non-HDMI inputs

The bottomline:

We had high hopes for the Philips 42PFL9703D, but a poorly performing 100Hz mode and some set-up quirks means the TV isn't the Bravia killer we first thought.

Has anybody setup the new Philips 42PFL9703D (9 series) with a video calibration disc (eg Digital Video Essential HD)?
I would like to hear what your results were.
What are your settings, did you adjust the colour palet, what picture enhancers do you have active, etc?
I have orded a copy of DVE on HD DVD, which should arrive by the end of OCT. I will post my results when the DVD arrives.

Pros: - Awesome SD picture, TV and DVD.
- Wasn't sure about the look at first but it has grown on me.
- Can be greatly rewarded after spending some time tweaking the settings.
- Again - Really Awesome SD picture

Cons: - Default settings are not good.
- Blacks could be darker (but thats LCD for you)
- Are all the picture enhancers necessary?
- No video streaming, I dont see why it couldn't if Philips wanted.

100hz leaves some to be desired. but all in all with its 2 ms response rate and wide colour gamut it provides colours as good as sony with none of the lag. 3 yr warranty provides good piece of mind, and usb and ethernet are welcome extras. having compared afl between the philips and bravia it is clear the philips is much better and better value for money.

Pros: 2ms
100hz
usb
ethernet
3yr
european

Cons: 100 hz and pixel plus can be detrimental
aesthetically not as good as the last series
no ambilight!!!

may as well turn natural motion and 100hz off unless you want a blurry picture in half your viewing, great picture quality, good size, good design..... i should have got a bravia with the recent price drops....

Pros: -very good picture quality, sometimes its fantastic
-software update a breeze
-made in europe
- Better spec'd than bravia

Cons: -not as clear as bravia
-poor 100hz & Motion
-colour red sometimes blurs and pixelates
-not enough set up options
-serious lack of inputs...

I was searching for the best TV I could find within budget and by purchasing the 9703 I know in terms of specs and now experiencing it, that it is far more superior to the rest.

Pros: Gorgeous picture in both HD and SD. Sport looks fantastic and I used to hate adds but now love them due to the picture quality :)

Cons: If I was to faulter anything about this TV would be the lack of Composite ports and having to buy a scart splitter to compensate but its no big deal really as I'm moving most devices over to HDMI.

This is the BEST LCD TV I've seen!!

Read this story tested this in store 100Hz is still fast BEST I've seen vs Bravia X-series and Samsung series.
KILLS all competition for BEST picture around.
Sales staff at Harvey Norman told me they claim best picture in store!

Bought one love it!! Great design, high quality - MADE IN EUROPE!

Pros: Full HD 1920x1080, 2ms response time, 17-bit colour processing, great depth of field, blacks, 30w audio dual subwoofer speakers, Ethernet Port, 4x HDMI, 3 year warranty

Cons: ??

Excellent picture quality, easy setup

Pros: Colour, clarity, sound

Cons: our model has a minor fault with the plastic surround, I know it is there, debating whether to replace the entire unit , but I know it is there, and at nearly 4k, it should be perfect :-)

Does this model eliminate juddering around fast moving sports in standard & high Definition broadcasts? As the promotional material released by Philips states. "Razor Sharp viewing"

Pros: Great specifications compared to its rivals

Cons: Do these spec's. do the trick in eliminating Judder in fast moving scenes across all sources?

!! change specifications
add to section [Connections]
LAN 1x (able play mp3; jpg; mpeg1/2 SD/HD; vob from network UPnP/DLNA server)

change in section [Display]:[Aspect ratio control modes]
16:9, 14:9, 4:3, Zoom
+Auto Zoom (option which checks black bars in picture and automaticly push them outside from the screen)

change in section [Display]:[Screen resolution]
1920x1080

[Tuner type]
High Definition !!!only models with 'H' at the end
**PFL**03D - DVB-T Mpeg2
**PFL**03H - DVB-T/C Mpeg2/4

Pros: *****(of 5*) Ambilight
(just only miss some option which able make some color gamma corection in case wall isnt white)

**** close to perfect SD picture quality(depends on channel, but much better than any other brand)

*** network files from home pc trough menu
(would like some more video files type support, two year older model line 9*31 able also avi)

***** Firmware upgrade trough USB

Cons: ** Philips has shortage
wernt easy to get it
and maybe that is a reason why Philips panels are more expensive than other brands

*** Black level
isnt as black as my Philips 220XW pc-monitor which has glossy LCD panel type

** Connectors from back side (now same as other brands)
two yers older models have conectors from down side what is much better for wall mount case

things which can be impruved just by firmware upgrade:
(just only a problem report that dirrectly to developers)

** media files from USB
cant access files in folders, only from root

** OSD Menu / Remote Control
menu comes ower picture;
by press {up} cant go to the end of list;
{left/right} doesnt able jump to next page;
{rouler} is too sensitive, but after some week have adapted;
{rouler} has different directions in different sections and some sections has only one direction;

** ~5% owerscan
miss manual zoom option

minus ***** files play mode
in that mode isnt able access Picture settings

** files play mode: photos
tv doent remeber last used settings,
there are only two: displaying time and how will be changed to next shot
