Sony has announced that the multiplayer component of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception has become free to play. Users will be able to get to level 15 — and continue playing at that level — but further level gains will need to be unlocked with a fee.
According to CNET's sister site GameSpot, none of the map packs for Uncharted 3 will be included in the free version, and must be purchased separately.
In-game items, including weapons, will also be available for purchase.
Speaking to GameSpot, Uncharted 3 game designer Justin Richmond said:
It's not a last-ditch effort to save the game. It's more about "is there an easier way to get people interested in the game to really try it out?" And I think free to play is the easiest way to do that.
