Vodafone coverage hits 94%
By Suzanne Tindal on 31 August 2009
Vodafone has gone live today with its expanded 3G coverage to rural areas, now reaching 94 per cent of the population.
Coverage has been extended out to Kununurra in Western Australia, Port Douglas in Queensland and Devonport in Tasmania, according to the company. Vodafone's 3G coverage previously reached 80 per cent of the Australian population. The upgrade has also included adapting the 2G network to support EDGE technology.
The completion of the upgrade has met the company's deadline, set earlier this year after the company failed to meet its former deadline of last Christmas.
Vodafone has marked the milestone with free access to Facebook for new and existing customers until 31 October 2009.
"Vodafone's great value 3G services are now available to Australians living and working in regional cities and towns, as well as business travellers and holiday-makers who need to stay connected," CEO of VHA Nigel Dews said in a statement.

A $30 spend at vodafone gets 1gb. Thats 4 times the data than Telstra for the same spend. Even better value can be had with a plan. Why bother with Telstra.

Tel$tra charge $30.00 for 225mb on pre-paid broadband. Three charge $30.00 for 2gb. Nearly 10 times as much. More than slightly higher prices. Yes, I live in the city, but I pity our country brethren who have no choice but Tel$tra.

I may pay a little more than one would via other service providers (not exactly "five times", but slight more...), but I have coverage almost everywhere and have only experienced one notable network issue in about five years...
I will however, point-out that Telstra's customer service is (usually) P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C (excluding their stores), and completely unjustified based on what I pay.
If Telstra could fix this customer service thing, then in my opinion, there would be no reason to complain about the slightly-higher prices one pays... -

From memory, Telstra theoretically covers around 99% of the Australian population, whilst Optus theoretically covers around 98% of the Australian population...
Bear in mind that those figures refer to POPULATION coverage, not LAND coverage - actual land coverage is somewhere in the vicinity of 3-5%. -

Ha, yeah me too. I live in the CBD in Sydney and have only ever had 1 bar of service. Ever. Why dont Vodafone fix their existing 80% coverage properly before spending our money trying to increase their coverage areas.
I would not use Vodafone again for internet. Useless -

I live in Ingleburn and get no vodafone signal at my place. Need to go up the hill, 50m away to make calls. Still cheaper than Tel$tra by far.

I switched to vodafone from 3 in march. at the time i was told that the vodafone network was faster than three by a longshot. however i've only had month after month of disappointing slow internet speed on my new phone, 3's internet was significantly faster.
It is so slow that my father ( who switched from Telstra to Vodafone at the same time) is seriously going to switch back to telstra because he can not stand the slow speeds.
Calling these speeds "3g" is a complete joke. they don't even merit dialup classification -

Gregory you pay 5 times the price with Telstra.

Wow, Vodafone added support for EDGE to it network and boosted it's 3G/UMTS coverage to 94% of the Australian population?
I'd hate to be the one to disappoint you all, but not only does Telstra's coverage well-and-truly exceed this (I believe their coverage is approximately 98% of the Australian population), but it's approximately five times the speed (with regards to data transfer) and has supported EDGE for at LEAST five years!
Yeah, if you wanna go with an outdated network, choose Vodafone...
For something modern (*cough cough* and reliable *cough cough*), choose Telstra. -

94% doesn't interest me when I live 5km from the Brisbane CBD and don't have vodafone coverage at my house. Covering the old 80% well would be better than badly doing 94%.
