Vodafone Pocket WiFi

There isn't much to differentiate the Pocket WiFi from similar devices in regards to performance, but the addition of its LED display gives it a leg-up in usability.

Design

Telco data allowances are swelling, and with these new monster-sized data caps comes the need to share the data you pay for with the multiple internet-capable devices you own. After all, if you lug an iPad, smartphone and laptop with you on the train to work each day you a) have a really big bag, and b) don't want to be paying for multiple internet connections.

We've seen a number of portable Wi-Fi hotspots lately, and we're even starting to see phones that can behave like a Wi-Fi hotspot, but something tells us the Pocket WiFi is one of the units we'll remember first when we think about this niche category. Why? It has a lot to do with design.

Up until we saw the Pocket WiFi all of the wireless hotspots we have reviewed had one thing in common: LED lights. Red ones, blue ones, green ones, and ones with several shades of yellow blinking and attempting to indicate the status of the modem using something akin to rainbow-coloured Morse code. Pocket WiFi is the first we've seen with an LED display, and it's a godsend. Now for the first time we can see signal strength, the remaining battery life and whether we've connected to HSDPA of a super-slow 2G service. There is also a few extra pieces of information displayed; there's the number of devices currently connected (great to be sure no one else on the train is leeching your data) and there's a counter that keeps track of how much data you've used in that session.

For more advanced usage details and settings, you can access a web portal for your modem by typing http://pocket.wifi into the URL of your browser once you're connected. The interface is clean and easy to use, even on the small screen of a smartphone.

Performance

As with all wireless broadband products, our test results reflect a number of factors, primarily the service we experienced from the telco in our test areas. Pocket WiFi is Vodafone exclusive in Australia and our test SIM was generously donated by Vodafone for the trial. The modem is rated at a maximum of 7.2Mbps, a speed no one outside of Voda's test team is likely to see.

We managed an average line speed of about 1.3Mbps on two separate devices simultaneously, and the same average speed when these devices ran speed tests one after the other. Pocket WiFi also performed well when placed in a different room and about 5 metres away from the connected smartphones and laptops, and, according to Vodafone, it is capable of supporting up to five simultaneous data connections. Battery life came out at just under five hours with a mixture of data transfers and standby power use.

Overall

Performance-wise, Pocket WiFi is on par with competing products available through Virgin Mobile and Internode, but the addition of the LED screen gives this latest device the edge. Having quick access to important information is far more preferable than trying to decipher the consistency of flashing, coloured lights. It is also a little cheaper too; for AU$119 you get a locked modem and a Vodafone prepaid SIM with 1GB of data to use.

I had a 3 Mobile WIFI with 3 Router n a post paid contract for a year, no real problems, however speeds were very average! not fast at all. My contract had finished and I rang to end it. I was put through to Vodafone (Due to the merge) and they harassed/haggled me for an hour and a half, giving me seemingly better and better deals. In the end I said I would give it a "trail" no lock in contract. I received the Modem three weeks later. Went to fire it up and "NO SIGNAL". Was told to go to the nearest store. Once there they said I had a faulty SIM which was replaced. They also said I was on a 12 month contract and had no details of the discount promised by the Indian call centre!!! I told them they had better get it sorted and went to retry the Modem. Got home. Pathetic speeds. By the next day the Vodafone network was completely down. Called and went ballistic at the Indian Call centre, they finally gave in after much discussion and said to take my Modem back to the store to cancel the contract. 5 Months later they are STILL sending me bills! and I have not downloaded more than 5mbs! I have wasted time and money talking to the call centers, went into the store to sort it out and they did not have a record of me returning it! had to bring in the paperwork from 5 months prior! I WILL NEVER BUY A PRODUCT OF ANY KIND FROM THIS COMPANY

The Good:Looks good

The Bad:List too long

Got the spell about how good Vodaphone was and how it will even get better through further development. Well its got worse, at least 3 never dropped out and was quicker and thats saying something. Everytime I sit down at the computer I have to go through the full diagnosis to get it up and running and sometimes that does work unless I disconnect the wifi and turn it off. Don't waste your money, con't wait until the contract is up.

My Vodafone USB finally failed to transmit data or connect at any speed (Edge, 3G or HSDPA).

I grabbed a wifi and put my USB sim in to it.
Wow, Full set of bars in a one icon outside rating according to Vodafone coverage map but I get the full set of 3G bars inside and under a tin roof.

My USB sim card has the 365 day plan from Vodafone with 1 G a month and costs me $150-00 a year.
Hard to beat that. Right ???

The Good:Looks good, LED display, Battery life

The Bad:Comes with vodafone's customer 'service'

I've had quite a different experience to most of the reviewers here.

I live in Noble Park, Vic, and have used it all over Melbourne and have had more than decent coverage, and speeds that I have pretty pleased with (usually achieving over 100KBps).

My main problem was that I entered the contract online (biggest mistake of my life, for god's sake if you want it then go to a store!). They sent me a sim card but no device (this is after 3 weeks by the way). It took me another 3 weeks to get someone from customer service to fix an error that the website made. Thankfully I was not charged for the first month.

So despite the extremely crappy service I have gotten from Vodafone reps, I have actually had a very good experience since. It has a battery that lasts a long time, and I usually keep the small USB port attached and charge in the car or wherever I am.

The Good:Digital display

The Bad:Not reliable

I've used this device for a few months now. Overall its been a terrible experience. Multiple 'drop outs' and all round disappointing performance. The worst thing about this device is the Vodafone service. No one at the company wants to know about the problems or seems to be able to help. Vodafone seems to think that offering "a free month of service" will solve the problem. Unfortunately a free month of poor performance doesn't change my opinion of the product. My advice, do not buy one.

The Good:good coverage and DL speeds.Cheaper than Telstra

The Bad:No Unlimited plan

I bought ViVid vivifi- after 2 days I took it back, the speeds were good but for large files, gaming and File sharing it was terrible - later found out they shape all the big data like you tube etc.
Anyways took it back and swapped it for the Pocket WIFI- get great signal (near Rockingham wa) which I cant get adsl2. DL speeds are good and i can connect all my devices and get decent speeds.
RECOMMEND 100%

Only downside is no UNLTD plans yet- which is good as i think i keeps the P2P mob away from downloading all day long.
Also Vodafone are upgrading the Antennas in Perth so its getting better.
Go get one if you want Mobile BB.
