Sony Ericsson has announced the Xperia X1 will be exclusive to Telstra's Next G network in Australia.
In a statement Sony Ericsson has priced the X1 handset at AU$1,499 with a 4GB microSD included in the bundle. Telstra has yet to name contract pricing for the smartphone, but has confirmed the X1 will be in stores in "early December".
The much-anticipated Xperia X1, Sony Ericsson's first Windows Mobile smartphone, was first announced during World Mobile Congress in February this year. The phone uses touchscreen input and features a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. Sony Ericsson hopes to differentiate this handset from its competition with what it calls the 'Xperia Panels' — a navigation system which acts as a home screen portal to a range of user customised interfaces.
Telstra has been successful in securing exclusive sales rights to many of this years most popular smartphone releases including the HTC Touch Diamond, HTC Touch Dual, the i-mate Ultimate series and the Palm Treo Pro, as well as non-exclusive rights to the Apple iPhone 3G.

I actually got this phone yesterday, from telstra. Had to go with telstra cause I live in the country. It cam with a 4 gig micro sd card not the usual M2 card which was a bit strange for SE. other than that things are looking good.

I just spoke to SE Australia and they said Telstra have the initial release within December 08. The Aussie market will be getting both the American version (UMTS850 – with Telstra) and the international version (UMTS2100 – with all other carriers). Both versions will support 3.5G, but the American version will only have video VGA@24fps, and also FM radio. The International version will have video VGA@30fps, but no FM radio. I definitely use video on my current phone now more than radio so the International version it is. Strange that we are forced to trade-off, oh well.

I am soooo disappointed I don't care if you can buy it outright somewhere else the whole idea of phone plans is convenience for those hard working people that have to PLAN it and there is no way I will convert to Telstra either. I have had my experience with them and in many areas they lack with service and quality. I have been hanging on to a phone that has done its life 2x over for the X1 what a disappointment

I spoke with a Telstra shop yesterday, what’s happening is Telstra is exclusively getting the X1a (being the American version of the handset, at least if the lettering is to be believed) of which will be the only version that will be able to use the "Next G" network. Telstra is launching the phone in Australia on the 8th of December. The only concern I’d have about the X1a is apparently in America the X1 breached a patient of some kind, specifically with the video recording. Long story short the X1a in the US has been limited to 320x240 @ 24fps. Telstra was unable to confirm if these limitations from the American version would be present in the X1a handset in Australia. Keep in mind that what I assume will be the X1i (which will be released on the other carriers in Australia) won’t have this video recording limitation if it does end up being present in the X1a on Telstra

Exclusive deal may mean only 3 months - but they are not going to tell you that - are they. Also Sony have two versions the x1a (NextG/ US version) & x1 (3G/ UK-Europe version) So they could have an exclusive as no one else will want the x1a but we may have to wait 3 months extra for the other carriers to get their hands on the x1. Also the price may be $1499 - but you can get it from the UK (3G) for around $1k or even less if you hunt around.

I wasn't expecting the X1 out til Jan 09 anyway, and with Telstra getting it first, I'll still be waiting til Jan/Feb 09, when I can GO WITH ANOTHER CARRIER! I would even consider buying this phone outright before entering into a contract with Telstra. Luckily my K850 is still going strong and I can hold out! Joseph, don't let "pdme" push you around! Ha!
