Nic Healey can usually be found on a couch muttering about aspect ratios and 7.1 channel sound - which is helpful given that he's the home entertainment guy at CNET.

The RX-A1020 is one of the new receivers to grace Yamaha's Aventage range, and it comes with a features list that is rich enough to match its premium pricing.

There are eight HDMI ports in, with two out ports to deliver separate video streams to different screens, if required. The 7-channel surround sound pumps out 110W per channel, and there's AirPlay and other network functions.

A front USB port is designed to work with iOS devices, while a phono jack on the rear will keep the vinyl enthusiasts happy. There's also 4K pass through for people worried about future-proofing their AV purchases.

As part of the Aventage range, there's a number of exclusive key features on the RX-A1020 as well, including an "Anti Resonance Technology Wedge", which is basically a fifth foot underneath the receiver that dampens vibrations; an aluminium front panel to shield the internal circuits; and a symmetrical power amplifier layout that helps improves signal to noise ratio.
